The difference between the Soul and the Ego
#7730749 - 12/07/07 09:11 PM (16 years, 1 month ago) |

I've recently been philosophizing on what a Soul is vs what an Ego is?
Do people donate to charity for the benefit of the Ego or the Soul?
Do people do good for the Ego or for the Soul?
Are people good because of the Ego or the Soul?
is everybody's soul the same?

Well if you donate to charity to better your soul, wouldn't that be a egoic reason to donate to charity?

I like to think the ego does things to make itself feel better, wheras the soul would do things because they are better. To donate to charity to better the soul betters the ego's feelings about the soul. Easing the ego. So even if everyone's soul is the same universal consciousness, the ego still needs to feel that it has a good soul.
Does that make sense?

The ego is selfish (relating to the self)
The soul is a combination of the selfish, selfless, and that which is in between (what probably more constitutes "you")

I like to think that the ego is something not necessary. It is what gives you pride. Its the part of you that makes you feel better than someone else for no reason.
The soul on the other hand is something different. I don't think you can perceive it like you can the ego. Rather, I think the soul is one's spiritual essence. It is the karma giver and receiver. When you donate to a charity or help the poor, the karma goes back to your soul and helps you. If you only donate to a charity to feel better about yourself then that is the ego talking and not the soul.
I believe that we should want to destroy our egos as much as possible.

I've realized alot of people on this website get the wrong idea about the ego...
The ego is your sense of self
and the point of ego death is too not go around without a sense of self, this will pose serious mental problems in life
the point of ego death is simply ego rebirth

I personally think the ego is the prison of the soul. Only when you dissolve your ego, is your soul truly free.

what do you mean by soul? Is it the spiritual matter that contains your personality? Or is it some other force? The Ego in the Freudian sense of the word is that which gives us the confidence to attain that which we need to survive. The question is.. Should we compromise our soul to satisfy our ego should we take from the weak to provide what our ego desires? Are we animals or are we Gods?

I think your soul is your je-ne-sais-quoi. Responsible in part for your identity, personality and well-being. I can't really define it, because I can't really directly experience it. To rhetorically answer your question: do you want most to be an animal, or do you want most to be a god? Ironically, attempting to achieve the latter is a product of your ego and thusly impossible. Without an ego, there is no self, therefor no wants. I personally think we are much better of experiencing both at individual intervals.

as far as im understanding from Ram Dass, all of our souls are equal,
so your greatest enemy and you differ only in ego's but our soul is the same. Which makes me wonder why people would go to hell necesarily if there is nothing you can do to improve your soul

some people believe that each individual has a unique soul. Not everyone believes in a universal consciousness or universal soul.
personally, I'm a universal consciousness guy.

alot of people want no wants...
On this board particularly ego death has become a real "egoic" thing. Its almost as if people are bragging about it.
I think if you want anything it's a reflection of your ego ^^^

I like to picture the ego as a living breathing part of you. Just as anything else is wants status, and wants to be the alpha, so if you experience death and come back, you are going to want to tell people about it.
Just as the ego would like to express it to people so they will give it status.

ego death doesnt mean your ego has died, it means that you lost your ego for a while, and your "youness" was gone.
It is still an egoic thing to go boasting about how that happened. Just because you lost your ego, doesn't mean the ego can't still be boastful about it.
Edit: i think the reason you tell people more depends on whether it is from the soul or the ego. If you are telling people you got ego loss to get a leg-up on them, then it is egoic, but if you do it so they may take that path and reach that sort of enlightenment, then i believe it is from the soul.
This is a hard subject to grasp for me.

Sure... keep in mind these are just my beliefs of course.
If everyone's soul is the same, or connected, then bettering your soul would not be egoic because it would be benefiting the entirety of humanity. This comes about in practical ways, too. Someone whose soul is just works to create harmony and peace.
I believe we as humans are born with all the knowledge we would ever need. Knowledge of God, the Universe, our connection with everything...
As we grow, the filters in our brain develop and we "forget" all this cosmic information. Life is a process of discovering it once again. Discovering one's "self" if you will.
However, one's ego (concept of self) must die in order to do this. To quote Dr. Stanislav Grof, "something has to die to be reborn." I believe this is what Christ was talking about when he spoke of being born again. It's an intense spiritual process. Upon return of the ego, it is more complete. We are more aware of the needs of others, of ecological factors, and of God Himself.
No one can say whether Ram Dass's actions were egoic or not, except himself, and perhaps people who knew him and saw a change based on those actions... it all depends on his motivation.
I don't feel like I've conveyed my feelings exactly with this post, but it'll have to do.

What do you mean by "soul". Are you talking about that thing that the Christain God sends to heaven or to hell when you die? Well, that thing probably doesn't exist.
If you are talking about the ego, then just look up what freud defined as the ego. It's his definition so there's no debate about it.
