casing question
    #7729036 - 12/07/07 02:36 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

8 cups peat
8 cups verm
1 cup gypsum
1/2 cup crushed oyster shell

mix dry ingredients together then put them in 160 degree water, put dry ingredients in pillow case and put in water for about an hour. afterwards I'm going to test Ph and add oyster shell if needed. i cant seem to get my casings right, so today i went out and bought some crushed oyster shell and gypsum. does these ingredients and percentages look OK?? i figured around 10% gypsum per volume of peat. and about 5% oyster shell per volume of peat. please add comments and suggestions. thanks

Correct pH using hydrated lime. You don't need the gypsum and the oyster shell, gypsum will do, especially if you correct the pH first

The crushed oyster shell gives a nice texture, but it won't do anything for pH control. Oyster shell flour or lime will raise the pH. I prefer hydrated lime because it's water soluable and adjusts the pH immediately, which is when you need the correction.
