Is this white mold on these rye bags? PICS
    #7728707 - 12/07/07 01:16 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

is this mycelium??? i have a stinking feeling these are contaminated. first three pics are Mex-A. last one is Atl #7. knocked up about 4 weeks ago. through the filter patch it smells sweet, but not really fresh-mushroom-sweet. same syringes were used on compost hpoo bags which are going great- no contams, so inoculation procedure should not be the culprit. all growth has been white since the start - it looked like mycelium, but now i'm not so sure.

these are 3 lb rye bags from a vendor sponsered by this site. i don't want to mention which one until there is some corroboration about whats going on here.

please help!! thanks!

The sweet smell could be a bacterial infection but I cant see any kind of mold in these photos.

It looks like mycelium for sure, but nobody can ID whether it's mushroom mycelium or mold mycelium until it makes it to the next stage. If you're growing sclerotia producing species, you should be able to see stones developing around the perimeter of the bag shortly after full colonization. That would prove you're growing mushroom mycelium. If any of them turns green, pink, yellow, brown, etc., toss it.

ok, thanks RR. knocked up 4 weeks ago, how much longer until stones should be expected? not really familiar with looking at rye or bags colonizing. it should turn 100% white with no brown from the rye showing through right?
had high hopes for these bags, would hate to find out they are bags of nasty white mold. just have to give it more time i guess...

In other words, you are saying that there is mold that looks pretty much the same as mushroom mycelium?
