Filter Patch Bags. They work. Especially with wood loving species and gourmet.

It's about the damn best there is. And yes, it is permeable. If you could blow air through it out of your mouth, then it would be wide open for contams to fall through. They are great for Gas exchange. Not Fresh air Exchange. Big Difference.

To sterilize. You need high positive pressure and high heat. Sterilization of WBS in an oven is not going to happen. You can try. But I don't see it working out well for you.
Filter patch bags are for sterilizing substrate in a PC or pastuerizing substrate for spawn in an oven.
Keep researching. And be on the lookout for a pressure cooker.

You cannot sterilize WBS without a PC.
Just spend the twenty dollars already.
Being cheap in this hobby is just going to cause you to fail enough to go back and do it right eventually.
BUY A PC or stick to cakes.
That's the only thing cakes are good for, is people who are too cheap to buy a pressure cooker.
I found a 21 quart PC in perfect working condition on www.craigslist.com for 40$. 21 quart is huge!
Oh, and this question has been asked about 3000000000000000 times in the last week alone. Search Posts?

I can think of quite a few experienced growers around here WITH pressure cookers that would beg to disagree with that statement. I challenge you to find just ONE substrate that has the biological efficiency of brf. RR

Grains are sterilized at 250F in a pressure cooker.
Manure/compost is pasteurized at 140F to 160F.
There's a big difference between the two and the techniques for each. RR

I sterilized my first WBS without a pressure cooker. I used 1/2 pint jars and those ziplock twist n loc and I sterilized them per Doc's WBS Tek except I sterilized waited a day and did it again and my cakes are on their second flush now.
JCLE
PS..I've found this only to work with something smaller than a pint because my pints all contamed..I suppose a third day of sterilization would have been sufficient..? Anyways later! I'm stoned sorry if this doesn't make sense..lol

What you are doing is called Tyndallization. It does not sterilize, it merely reduces the level of activity of sporulating bacteria that are left by a simple boiling water method. The process involves boiling for a period (typically 20 minutes) at atmospheric pressure, cooling, incubating for a day, boiling, cooling, incubating for a day, boiling, cooling, incubating for a day, and finally boiling again. The three incubation periods are to allow heat-resistant spores surviving the previous boiling period to germinate to form the heat-sensitive vegetative (growing) stage, which can be killed by the next boiling step. This is effective because many spores are stimulated to grow by the heat shock. The procedure only works for media that can support bacterial growth - it will not sterilize plain water. Tindalization is ineffective against prions.
People. Make the leap of faith and get a pressure cooker.
