will this work:
Perlite in the bottom of the chamber to provide humidity. Poly fil to provide FAE. I want to use magash's tek where I make 4 jars for every 1 colonized jar, put them in a bag and crumble them together. Is there any way I can turn these back into cake style mounds so I can rest them on the perlite without being a layer of substrate?
thanks!

Well after you have mixed the spawn and the non-inoculated four jar together you can just colonize the mix and after the colonization just pack jars with the resulting material and leave them packed for a few days. Then just remove the resulting cakes and rest them on the perlite. It's alot of extra steps but if you want to waste the time then go for it. Otherwise you can get two containers. One has to be big enough for the other container to sit in side with room around. Cut the smaller container so that you make it into a tray( leave room for the caseing layer. Then fill the larger container with wet perlite and rest the tray/container in the larger container but keep it at least one inch off the perlite. Place the lid on the larger container and now all you have to do is rehydrate the perlite and put in a fresh tray one the current one stops fruiting. This method will take half as much time and is super easy, I came up with the method when I was fourteen. P.S make sure the space between the the tray and the container walls is enough for moisture to rise and humidify the container.

If you crumble them together, only to make new "cake style mounds" in your FC, after you do so, the crumblings may try to fruit, and you will only get crappy, tiny shrooms. The only reason you crumble is to spawn to bulk, or to case. Anything else is a waste of time.
Your FC idea sounds ok.

Don't make mounds, just make small trays.

Well, a 'cake' is just any block of fully colonized mycelium. Since cubensis does not require a casing layer to fruit, you should be able to break your huge 'chunk' into smaller 'cakes' and fruit them PF style. As long as the humidity stays at 99-100% and you're misting, they should fruit and shouldn't dry out. Some vermiculite in the m ix to aid in holding water can't hurt though.
If you're really going to do this there's no reason to use polyfil. Just drill a few well placed 1/4" holes on every side of your FC to provide FAE. Make sure your humidity doesn't drop below 99%, though.
Now, here's my take on your situation. Using perlite for humidification is just fine. In fact its probably the best way to humidify a terrarium. But instead of making several smaller cakes, you should break up the mycelium, put it into some kind of container that is a few inches deep, allow it to recover overnight, and at least case it with some vermiculite. You'll get better yields, prettier mushrooms, and then you've only got one 'big cake' instead of several small ones to worry about.
Bleh. I haven't been posting in the mushroom cultivation forums at all lately. I hope I wasn't able to provide at least some useful information.
