Trich On Verm 'Insulation Layer' - BRF
    #7726061 - 12/06/07 08:14 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

Hey Guys,

On my latest jar inspection, I noticed a couple of jars had some problems. The jar in this post is a B+ strain on BRF 1/2 pint cake. It took a little while (3+ weeks) to fully colonize, but has fully colonized the cake. As per RR's recommendations, we let the fully colonized cake stay incubating for another week. At the end of that week, I checked it and it had grown a 'patch' of what I think is trich (it's green...) right at the top of the jar where the verm insulation layer meets the cake. The cake is fully colonized and all the way up to where it's 'touching' the trich.

My questions are: Is it strong enough to fight off the trich? Can I just remove that part of the cake and use the rest or is it better to not chance it?

Also, there was what I think was bruising at the bottom of the cake (they've been bumped around a couple of times) but I included a picture so you could see better. Is that bruising or more trich???

Here are the pics. I turned the contrast all the way up and upped the brightness a little so you could see everything.

Links to imageshack removed. Do not post those here.

The bottom photo looks like metabolites.

I cant see anything in the top photo. If the green spot gets larger throw it out. Trich is a pain in the ass to deal with especially if spores get out in your house. If it is trich throw it out.

It might just be the contrast. It doesn't have any kind of yellow'ish tint to it in person. It just looks like a bruised cake. Also, that black spot is just verm (burnt perhaps?). I run into those black verm pieces all the time. I will probably just end up tossing the jar (don't want to get stuck with some new trich spores in my kitchen!). I'll go ahead and give it another week to fight it off though.

Trich is white until it sporulates. If that is trich then it probably has spread pretty far on the cake. Time will tell though.

Best of luck,
pazzy

I see green in both pictures, looks like mould, its most likely through the centre of the substrate.

I would toss and start again.

To me it points to the dry verm barrier getting wet allowing a contam to grow thew it to the substrate.

Did you cover the lids of the jar with tinfoil during pressure cooking??

Was your substrate too wet, this can dampen the dry verm layer.
