They can be cooked to be very tasty but Im only interested in chanterelles, boletes and morels. I sadly cannot get a culture or sample due to the fact they are now gone also. thuis picture was taken last week and they have since turned to goo. I could try to get a sample of mycelium from the stumps though.

They are extremely tasty in my opinion.... but my stomach tends to disagree. I ate my last delicious plate of these 2 nights ago, waiting to see if my stomach would react, and it did. It's more an uncomfortable feeling i'd like to avoid, than anything else. Yes, I cooked them very well. Extremely well. Longer than I've ever seen anyone cook mushrooms! Hehe.

If only I could make my way out of the house into those woods again

you dont want a culture of this....its an ultra agressive parasite. if it gets loose in your yard it will eat all your trees and look for more.
honies are best eaten and are more digestible at this stage of development.

Never tried any kind of honey mushrooms before myself. I find them quite often, just heard too many stories about stomach upset with them so, I'd rather not.

if you get them young and cook thoroughly...stomach upset is not a problem. that said they are best canned or pickled....they dont taste as good as a matsutake or chanterelle

I made some matsutake soup last week.
Next time I will just use dirty socks and cinnamon.

matsutake are best roasted over an open flame or chargrill, and served with ponzu .
to eat a matsutake...it is best to bring it up to your mouth..inhale sharply to get the aroma then bite and chew.
honestly- properly prepared they are amazingly delicious.

So Honey's will really destroy the tree it grows on? How long does this take? I thought most tree's and plants benefited from the symbiotic relationship with fungi. I wonder how they evolved into a parasitic relationship.

Yes, they will try and kill the tree they are growing from if it is not already dead. Honey Mushrooms are both saprotrophic and parasitic.
Indeed, many plants benefit from fungi, but not from all fungi. Some fungi are friends and some are foe.
Alan knows someone who's tree in their front yard fell and destroyed half of their house. He says that now the stump where the tree use to stand fruits with gigantic flushes of Armillaria, Honey Mushrooms! He should get photos.
