networking home computers question

Hey, I just moved to a new house and I am having trouble networkign mine and my flatmates computers. I used to have them networked at my old house but I had my ex-boyfriend do it and i want to avoid ringing him for help. He was a networker for a job. Anyway I just want to set it up so that everyone can use the connection at once, I don't want to do file sharing. The questions I have are:
1) is it simple to do? 2) does it usually tell you how to do the networking in the user guide for the modem (i dont have the user guide). 3) I am having trouble finding info on the internet. So 3) - would someone find me a good basic guide on the internet to home internet networking? If you need the name of the switch model I have, it is a Skymaster 8 port 10/100 Fast Ethernet Switch.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Like most things involving computers, it's simple if you know how to do it. Otherwise is can seem pretty daunting. I have a few questions:
1) Do you have a broadband connection you're trying to share (cable or DSL)? If so, do you a modem, or a router? If you aren't sure, what does it say on the box which plugs into the phone line or cable jack?
2) What operating system(s) do you have running on the computers you're trying to network (Windows XP, Mac OS X, etc)?
Let me know and it should be pretty straightforward.

Hey Ythan. Yeah I have broadband internet. I have a modem and a router. The operating system I have is Windows 2000. The router I have is Skymaster 8 port 10/100 Fast Ethernet Switch. A switch is a router, yeah? :S I'm a mongy when it comes to computers. And the modem I have is a Netgear ADSL2 + Modem DM111P - or that's what it says on the bottom. I really appreciate your help with this.

Just hook up the modem to the switch and the computers to the switch

Wow!! Is it really that simple? Are you sure there is nothing I have to do to the settings?

If the modem handles subnetting, otherwise only one computer will be able to work at once, due to one IP.
If not, routers are not expensive. You plug a network cable from one socket into it, into the same shaped socket at the back of your computer, or if you have wireless, I hope you enjoy flaky, intermittent access.

Hey,
A switch actually isn't a router, and it looks like the DM111P doesn't have routing capabilities. If you want to share the connection with more than one computer, you'll need to get a router. You can set your PC to act as a router using Windows Internet Connection Sharing, but you'll have to install a second network card and leave that computer on all the time or the connection will drop. I would recommend just getting a hardware router, a basic one is very cheap. Something like this would probably work fine if you don't need wireless support. Just plug your DSL modem into the WAN port and plug your PCs into the LAN ports. You won't use the Skymaster switch unless you want to add more than 4 computers to your network. Everything will probably work straight out of the box; if not, Netgear usually has a pretty user-friendly web-based setup and you can get help here.

Actually, what boom suggested worked! I must already have a network card or the set up must be right from before.... Anyway, thanks very much for all your help people

Glad to hear it. If you run into problems when both computers are using the net at once, look into a router.

Woops, you're right, it is actually not handling two computers at once. I thought it was working since I could use the net with the modem connected to the switch. Seems I will have to buy a router! Thanks for your advice, that would prob have taken me a millenium to work out on google. I think my old modem was a router as well as a modem.

Most new DSL modems come with built-in routing capability, while cable modems (currently) do not.
