Pressure cooker question
    #772557 - 07/24/02 07:11 AM (22 years, 6 months ago)

I have a pressure cooker but its a couple years old and it doesnt have a guage is there any way to sterlize my jars without this guage. is there a way i could time it. so my question is as soon as put the water in the cooker and the jars how long should i keep it under the flame to sterilize it? one more thing its only a 6 qt cooker so ill probaly have to do 2 or 3 batches

ALF ( yeah that furry guy that eats your cats and had his own show years ago and now doing 10-10 commericals )
puts enough water to come up half way up the bottom layer of the jars...
alf puts 14 half pints in his pc with two layers ... with the jars just stacked on top of each other ...

no crack jars yet ... WWWWWWWWWWWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

If your PC doesn't have a guage, does it have a weighted vent stop? If you answered no I would STRONGLY urge you to take it to your local extention office to test. Not knowing the psi is very dangerous. There isn't a magic formula saying low flame for x minutes will be good. If your PC is getting less than the recommended 15psi your time is dependant on how far off it is. If it is more than 15psi you could experiance a safety valve blowout. Do you have a pic of your PC? I just don't want you to get hurt is all.

Here are some pictures just before i rinsed it out and put in the dishwasher you can see why i put in the dishwasher i hope these pictures are good enough if not could you explain where the weighted vent stop would be.

The funny thing on the top with a ring is the weight. It might be a fixed weight (I've seen fixed weight 10 and 15psi units) or it might be an adjustable unit (5/10/15psi)...OR.....if might have a little bar that rises out of it as the pressure climbs (my mom used to have a unit like that).

If you know what brand it is, see if you can get manuals from the manufacturer. I know Mirro and All American keep copies of their manuals on the web.

Good luck.

Congrats. You have an automatic pressure cooker

There's some decent advice on that site. It doesn't seem to indicate what pressure it gets up to, but I would suspect 15psi...

Your pressure cooker is the same as mine, it's a Prestige. And it does 15psi. I've got the manual so ask anything you want.

i just aquired a pressure cooker for free. It doesnt have a guage on it but it looks like it used too. Is there a place i can buy guages? can i just do the med heat 20 minutes then 45 minutes low heat?
Just checking because i dont want to blow the fucker up.
