rolling cakes late? **UPDATE new pics Dec 13th***
    #7725293 - 12/06/07 04:46 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

Can I take some stubborn cakes out of my FC and roll them to try to initiate pinning? I have them at 70F and 100% RH but still I am not getting pins after 2 weeks in the FC, I figure since its only 2 half pint cakes in a large FC they are not getting the proper moisture right on the surface of the cake, I know that is what the rolling in verm does, I just didn't know if it would be harmful to mist the cakes down and roll them in verm, then put back in the FC.

lemme know if its cool to do.

As long as there is no hyphol knots or primordia then you can re-dunk and roll in verm.

Sometimes a redunk can help a stuboarn cake, plus it will probably have dried out a little anyway.

Give it a dunk in water for 24 hours and roll in verm.

I said fuck it and just rinsed both cakes and rolled em in some verm. Then I put em back in the FC and misted them. Hopefully in a few days, we will get some pin action.

I read that the average is around 5-7 days to pin after dunk and roll.

hey hey, i rolled em only yesterday and I am getting mycielum growth on both of the cakes and one started pinning with 4 pins on the bottom of it already,

the pins are comming out of the very bottom of the cake, almost resting on the foil that the whole cake is sitting on in the perlite.
Should I flip the cake over so that the pins have more room to stretch out?

when i can post pics of the pins when they get bigger, i will.

no, leave them on the bottom. they like it ther.

the humidity is likely highest there. I.ve had a few cakes pin from the bottom. then from the middle and top next flush.

cool. I will remember that, of course! the humidity is higher.

are there any tips for keeping humidity high in a perlite FC, i just think near teh center of the FC the open air is not at 100RH even though my meter is reading that.

Will putting cups of evaporating water help raise the RH?

no, there isn't much surface area on a cup of water. But if you have lots of cakes in the chamber, the actual cakes will increase the humidity that extra couple of degrees.

Some of the best pics I have seen of fruiting cakes were in FCs that had the cakes closely packed (without touching). The cakes seemed to create a microclimate that favoured pinning

yeah thats the problem, i only have two cake in there. do you think i should cut a 2 liter bottle in half and put it on top of each cake?

I think that would boost the fuck out of the humidity around the cakes area.

whats kk ty?

The shrooms are getting bigger today. There are 5 that are growing bigger everyday, the other few pins are staying small, the pinhead didn't turn black though. What are the chances that they aren't aborts? How many days of no growth signifies a pin that has aborted?

Is it possible to get large shrooms from such a small cake?

I am waiting on two mini casings to colonize.
I have one that is a half pint of WBS, the other I used some half colonized coir that i got from a monotub that got some green mold. I just scooped the good looking myc from it and stayed away from the green. Hopefully I won't get the same mold in the minicasing. But i probably will.

well i got .8 grams dried from that one cake. it was getting trich so i trashed it after I picked the 4 mushies i got off it. I got a mini casing going so I am waiting for some more. My damn jars that I have been pressure cooking have been getting green contam. I have gone through like 10 jars that have contamed. some from not PCin long enough and some from a contamed syringe. It has put me back a while. I have some pint jars almost colonized, I am gonna spawn to like 30 percent coir and straw. Hopefully I get some decent yields from that. I just can't seem to get bulk to work.

which grain did you use for that 10 lost jar ?? and how did you hydrate them maybe the problem is how you do it , or the grain itself ( maybe it was sitting around for long times or not favorable environment etc .. )

anyway as a general rule it is told to soak them for 12- 18 hours till they can't suck up more water , by doing this you hydrate the wbs + wake the endospores and make them vulnerable to pressure cooking , maybe that was because of this .
Peace =)

yea. probably. I am gonna soak overnight next time. Its just that I don't have a stove that I can cook on so when I do get to cook at a friends house I don't know until that day. Could I soak the wbs, then drain and load the jars and wait a few days before PCin? would this cause me any problems?

i wouldn't do that, there is a high chance that they will start to get smelly and gross (fermentation). i ran into a schedule conflict a month or so ago and let me tell you: pounds of soaked grain gets really gross, really fast and, in my case at least, smells like vomit. ugh.

i don't know if this will help you any but when it comes to WBS, i typically steep it in boiling water for 12 or so hours prior to making the jars. if i run into time problems i drain, rinse well and steep again. sometimes it is a little on the dry side but i've never had any issues with that (even though i always inoculate with plenty of LC to offset that fact, i think strait spores would do just fine - better a little too dry than a little too wet)
