rejected!

i was all set to sign a lease for this really nice, surprisingly cheap, ideally located house when i was informed (after i had spent $40 dollars on an application fee of course) that my application had been rejected because of a misdemeanor possession charge i received 7+ years ago. that's such bullshit! i'm so mad right now.
the thing that pisses me off the most is that they all but approved my friend's application and said we could sign the lease a couple days after i turned my application in. then once i turned mine in they rejected him too because he paid his rent 6 days late twice last year. i think they just wanted our application fees and never intended to rent to us at all. one reason i believe that is that i know a guy who rents one of their properties who spent time in jail for having a bunch of pot and ecstacy. obviously he has a record, but they rented to him anyways.
i don't know...i guess they just didn't like the way we looked. it sucks because that house was so awesome too. the search continues...

I think it's terrible. I see my friends being punished and held back for shit they did years ago.
Can you even be a doctor if you have a criminal record?

I'm still paying for my criminal record every day, and it's been over 8 years now - and I still have a hard time finding work. Luckily, I have understanding friends, and I live in our house and pay them under the table without even being on the lease. Sorry to hear about your lease getting shot down dude - shit manages to get in the way all the time nowadays with all the background check garbage.

I wonder if you're a rock with a criminal record, would you still get held back.
Probably not.

They probably didn't take your money and run, they probably used it for the credit and background check. Those things aren't free.
Check your state rental code to see if its legal to charge an application fee. In some states, the cost of a credit and background check is considered a cost of doing business as a rental property owner.
