Destruction of Nature, Sacrifice for Human Exploration

My friend and I were discussing the way that the human race is progressing and we were agreeing that a barter system (trading amongst neighbors, growing your own crops, etc) would definitely be beneficial. Not only for financial reasons, but also for strengthening the concept of community, promoting healthier food choices and obvious environmental reasons. He was of the position that everyone should revert back to this societal structure. I thought a moment and realized that if we were to do this, technology would be sacrificed. I said it is basically a choice between living off the land (simple life) and exploring the stars. If our current society were not functioning, destructive as it is, technological advances leading to satellites, spacecraft and the like would not be available. Certainly there could be hybrids, creating a synergy between self sustained lifestyles and technology (possible due to solar technology most likely.. fucking oil companies.. ), but thats not what I am thinking about right now.
Anywho, the reason I'm making this thread is because I want ideas for a painting I am planning. The concept is basically to juxtapose a beautiful, nebula streamed night sky with a rocket ship heading towards it and underneath the sacrifice nature is making for this ability to have that rocket ship. Deforestation, polluted waters, factories, war, etc. What I am looking for are ideas that may be conducive to the theme I am going for. It is going to be a fairly large piece (I usually do smaller works) so I am doing a lot more brainstorming/planning for this. Thanks!

What about the fact that we didn't just *pop* into a currency system all at once. We used to barter, then over time we didn't because it worked. Is there really any other alternative? Thousands upon thousands of years brought us here. Doesn't seem like we had much of a choice in the matter.

We rape the life giving earth which sustains us. All the animals think we're morons. They didn't get eaten by the waves of the tsunami in Thailand thanks to their dandy supersensible perception. The oil company is one enormous, insatiable phallus. Imagine how much more humanity would be able to live up to its potential without ingesting all these preservatives and breathing all these toxic fumes and petroleum and...ya...you know...awesome idea for a piece. post some pics.

Oil company phallus.. I could work with that.. thanks. :P
As for where currency has taken us.. the numbers have become too large. Dependence on grocery stores and fast food outlets may allow us more time to watch sitcoms, but in the long run it is doing no good, for the health of us and the health of our planet. I look at the Wal Marts and the superstores coming up these days.. soon we may (some of us) live in Wal-Marts and never see the sky. That is not life.
Well, I suppose it is life.. but you know what I mean.

Don't you think maybe we're just at a really unsteady point in our technological lives? And that going backwards is completely asinine? We're at a teetering point. We're like toddlers learning to walk. It hurts to watch but it WILL pay off. When we have complete control of our genomes, clean unlimited (almost) power, and space colonization you will be glad we switched to currency and allowed technology to happen.
