Blue Ray or HD DVD?

I recently purchased a nice HDTV. Which is better. HD DVD or Blue Ray? or should i say which one will be around longer and be more popular with more titles. I have an xbox 360 that i can buy an upgrade for that only costs 170$. the thing is. i dont want to buy that and then start to build an HD DVD collection which might get taken over by blue ray.

blu ray is inherently better.
i've got a 360 and i hate sony (they pioneered blu ray) but it is better in pretty much every way.
if you were seriously thinking about getting an hd dvd player then i would definitely go with the xbox one because it's the cheapest and a good idea and they used to have some deal where you get 5 free movies.. i dunno if they still do it.
i dont think one is going to overshadow the other one so if you really want it go for it..
or you could do what i do (for free) download HD torrents and plug your computer to your hdtv..

Why choose? You can get a combination Blue Ray and HD-DVD player for $300.
This one for example.

I agree that blu-ray is better in just about every way, and i also despise sony, but i see hd-dvd winning out on this one for the mere fact that hddvd is cheaper. the NECT format war is what will matter, as it will be digital, ie: flash vs something else ???
in any case, hddvd is really all you need for now. why spend more on features that are really quite useless. i would say, however, that if you own a ps3, then blu-ray all the way, but if its the 360, stick to the hddvd.

hd dvd will win just b/c of it's name. if i'm not mistaken, the porn industry is also behind it which is how vhs beat out beta max. i agree blue ray is better, i just don't see it winning the format war.

No one will win the format "war" and both sides will lose. Why? because the only people who will actually benefit from any type of HD format are those with a 42" screen and up. Who wants to pay extra money for minimal improvements they will hardly notice?
IMO by the time either format becomes "mainstream" something more convenient and better will come along. Already, I can order HD movies "on demand" through Comcast. For $3.99 I can instantaneously get access to an HD movie I don't have to return.
Soon, we'll be able to download these movies permanently into a little box that sits next to the TV. No waiting for discs to come in the mail, no rental returns, any movie you want instantaneously. Want to take a movie or two with you? Load it into a small USB-type device.
My prediction: In 5 years no one will care about either HD format. No matter which you buy, its a lost cause that will go the way of the Laser Disc. Neither will ever catch on.

I'm no good at predicting these kind of things...
-As a little kid I could see no need to have anything but my 8-track player. -I thought my uncles Betamax was the shit in the late 70's. -My friends had a LaserDisc player in the early 80's. I thought that was the future. -Then I thought for sure the Sega Saturn would squash the Play Station. -Finally I thought I had it figured out when I bought both a VHS-C and an 8MM camcorder...soon the digital models came out.
...you get the idea.
Now I have a blu-ray player. But only because it is built in to my PS3. I've yet to see a blu-ray movie on it. I would like to have the Planet Earth box set on blu-ray though. I just might drop the cash for that one.
