The best ones for the job are "repeat cycle" timers, I use the Intelligent Growing Systems IGS-011 precision cycle timers, which can do down to 30 seconds on / 30 seconds off, if I remember correctly. These types of timers are going to be more expensive than the off brand lamp timers you find at retail stores, but they are considerably better suited for the job. And aren't made like shit.

I've seen a ton of timers out lately for the Christmas lights season, and out of curiosity had a look at them. Almost every one I could find actually had blatant warnings on the package reminding the consumer that when handling the product they are exposed to notable concentrations of lead. Yuck!

you can pick up a timer at almost any department store
basically the cheaper ones go for about 3-4$ and you can set them for as many pins as you have (you need an on pin and off pin), they usually come with 2 sets

i also saw a pinless timer, that i believe would allow you to set your timer for like every 10 mins if you liked
it was listed for $4.95 at wal-mart

this time of the year is PERFECT for buying a good timer
