Help ID mushroom growing in my bonsai pot.
    #7723302 - 12/06/07 06:57 AM (16 years, 1 month ago)

Please help me id this mushroom.
I'm located in South Florida. This mushroom popped up in my little bonsai pot yesterday.
Here it is last night when I noticed it.

Side view

Just to give you an idea of the scale:

Here it is this morning:

And:

Here are some identifying features:
About 2.5 inches tall and the cap diameter is about 1.5 inches.
The color of the cap turned from tan with brown center to gray / bluish gray as it matured.
The gills are purplish/gray ( dark ).
There are two little ones growing a little distance from it.
The bonsai pot is indoors, on a window sill.
There's fine fuzzy whitish stuff growing on top of the soil in the pot on one side (underneath and around the mushroom).
The temp has been 77-79F.

Peace love and all that...

This kind of looks like a Psilocybe semilanceata to me, but I'm not very sure, as i am not extremely experienced with ID'ing shrooms, the fuzzy stuff is the Fungus' mycelium.

This isn't a Ps. Semilanceta. And actually it doesn't look like it in any way ( no offense )

Now, I know what it's not, but I don't know what it is

Looks like an Inky Cap, probably Parasola plicatilis.

It sure does look like that and it probably is, but the last photo makes me wonder. Usually Parasola type things have jet black gills at that stage of maturity.

Reminds me a little of Bolbitius.

I considered that as well, but the gills of Bolbitius are orange/brown, and I have not seen any species with distinct ridged striations on the pileus. That is a feature typical of Parasola. A lot of Parasola I have found have light gills simply because they are so dainty, and don't have a lot of area for heavy spore production.

Good to see that we have such diversity of thought in this thread.

The mushroom doesn't really care what we call it.

NWDude, I disagree. This photo and description both suggest otherwise.

Yes, there are quite a few (about 4) and one looks like an abort.
Are they harmful? I thought mushrooms were generally beneficial to plants forming a symbiotic relationship.
Just a side note: The tree was shedding, so some leaves fell on the soil at the base and I let them be there. Could that be a contributing factor?

After comparing it with googled pictures, thats exactly what it is, or was because as of now it lies in a little shriveled heap on the soil. It was amazing to see such a fast growing being, with a lifespan of about 2 days.
Thank you and I feel I'm in good company.

There are some mushrooms which are mycorrhizal, forming symbiotic relationships with plants, there are also parasitic mushrooms which feed on and kill plants, and then there are the saprotrophs, like P. plicatilis, which are decomposers of dead material and are not harmful to the plant.

Thanks Curecat. While you are at it, here's another one for you(or anyone else interested):
By strangest of coincidences, the pot right next to it popped up a few mushrooms of its own, but different species. What is going on? My girlfriend says, in her many years of experience, she's never seen one mushroom grow in indoor pots, let alone two different types within two days. But I digress.
Here are some pics:

close up

some identifying features:
Height: 1 1/2 in
Cap dia: 1/2 in
Stalk is white
Cap has a dark solid rusty brown center with radiating rusty spots outside to the end of the cap.

So, what are these? Also is this some sort of synchronistic event, an omen?
