Tilting a tub for better drainage?
    #7723279 - 12/06/07 06:45 AM (16 years, 1 month ago)

Whats up guys

I had an idea I wanted to put across some of the more experienced folks out there... would it be smart to have a single drain (possibly w/ a plastic valve attatched) in one of the bottom corners of your tub (fruting chamber), and then sitting the tub on a tilt to direct excess water out that drain hole? This way, you could never really overhydrate, right? I know it leaves an opening for contams and possibly it facilitates evaporation (prolly minimally), but caouldn't this be fought off with H2O2 at the drain and normal waterings?

Whatcha think??

That how i have my tank setup. I have a ultrasonic running 24X7, a cool mist for FAE, and about 3in of perlite on the bottom to absorb excess moisture from the ultrasonic. Then in the two back corners of the tank i have 2 drain plugs so whatever the perlite cant absorb just drains out into a bucket. Ive been running my setup like this for 4-5 months and haven't had a problem with FAE or humidity since. Every 3-4 weeks i just change out the perlite with new perlite. No real need, i just hate how dirty the perlite gets from the verm and spores. I like to keep things looking clean and since its only 1.50 a bag i dont bother with cleaning it.

My terrariums have at least fifty 1/4" holes drilled into the bottom for water to drain and air to enter. As long as you're talking a fruiting chamber it's fine. Don't have holes in the bottom of a substrate tray, or they'll encourage pinning down there.

actually, i wanted to have my substrate fruit in the same chamber.. that was the point in the valve, leave it closed (unless it really needs draining)for the most part, and then case it and throw it in to fruiting when the times right..

Also, if i added a casing layer to the bottom, over the hole especially, wont that deter contams due to the lack of nutes in the casing (prolly 50/50)?

i think the drain would help with dunking as well.. and RR, is it pretty key to have good gas exchange downstairs? I see a lot of teks/logs that appear to have a solid bottomed tubber..

Thanks for the help. you guys are stellar
