The Combine
    #7721545 - 12/05/07 07:51 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

The machine is out there, churning, chopping, burning, beating, grinding, pressing, pushing, pulling, turning over its soil and laying the seeds of 'normality'. A perfect harvest.

I remember as a kid the connection I had with nature; always wanting to be outside; playing with daddy-long legs, catching dragonflies, building tree forts, playing in brooks, drinking from streams, laying in the grass, eating snow, predicting the weather using my senses. I can't do it anymore. I want to but I can't. I can't find the daddy-long legs, dragonflies fly away, the brooks and streams are polluted, the trees are dying, the grass smells like gasoline, the weather is different now. The combine has rolled through and churned the land into concrete and steel. A black and white world of artificial.

I loved having the skills though. I knew which rock housed the most life, which trees I could climb, the smell of snow in the air, the sound of wind, the color of life. I hope its still there; buried beneath the math equations and snapshots of 'happiness'. Its there. It has to be, but sometimes the exhaust of the machine is too loud to think. You follow the sound because its the only sense left.

Have you been processed yet?

So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.

I caught more lightning bugs in a jar when I was younger....

BUT, a few months ago I did find a Luna Moth when I was out on a smoke break at work....
I went in and got a large clear bottle, carefully scooped it up, and took it inside to show everyone....
I was pretty fascinated with it (having only seen them in books), it was HUGE and was marked with beautiful colors....
But, nobody else shared in my excitement....  Whatever, I thought it was F'n cool....!    :ohwell:

Catch and release, and then I was back to being a robot in no time....    :borg:

A few centuries ago, I was at a Fourth of July beach party. Lots of drinking, munchies and boom boxes and such. We were a ways from the ocean and I wandered down to the water. To my surprise, it was bio-luminescent, which I had only seen in the tropics - never in California.

I called everyone down and only one person came. "Look," I said to her, "it is like the stars are in the water." We stood quietly in awe for a while admiring the sparkling jewels, then went back to the noise.

Mike - I cannot possibly be more insistent that you MUST READ A Language Older Than Words by Derrick Jensen. This is the book for you - right now. Do yourself a favor and read it! Don't wait. Find it by any means necessary. I read it at a time in my life where I felt exactly like you do, and it was transformative. I can't express how important it was.

Orgone - the phosphorescence is found pretty far north in the Pacific. At least as far noth as southern coastal BC. You can see it on the Sunshine Coast most of the time (at least in the summer.)

I've been looking for a new book to get into and that one looks interesting. Thanks for the recommendation.
