Study: Teens Get Good Grades With or Without Pot

Study: Same kids, straight or stoned
A national pro-pot group that backs a Bay State campaign to decriminalize marijuana is shopping around a new Swiss study showing that teens who smoke grass are just as likely to get good grades as kids who abstain.
The study, which is being promoted by the Marijuana Policy Project, found teens who smoked pot were also more likely to have strong relationships with friends and were not any more likely to be depressed than their substance-free counterparts.
A top Beacon Hill lawmaker slammed the study, which was published in last month’s issue of Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.
“It’s really outrageous. I’m appalled,” said Rep. Peter Koutoujian (D-Waltham), chairman of the Joint Committee on Public Health. “This is a perfect example of academics gone wild.”
Bruce Mirken, a spokesman for the Marijuana Policy Project, said the group is hoping the study will force “an honest discussion of what the data actually say” and prove that the federal government “twists the data to try to frighten parents about marijuana.”
Mirken said kids should not be smoking pot, but “that rather than panicking parents about the straight-A student caught smoking pot with their friends, perhaps we should be focusing on the kids using multiple drugs who are in real trouble and clearly in need of help.”
But Koutoujian blasted Mirken’s group, saying, “What this study does is send a very bad message. This only damages their cause because it’s salacious and baseless.”
The study’s author, J.C. Suris of the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, said light users of marijuana “don’t have great additional problems. They are kids who function well.”
“Those who use cannabis sometimes do better than we think,” Suris said in a recent interview with Bloomberg News.
Koutoujian noted that the 2002 study - which surveyed more than 5,200 students ages 16 to 20 - doesn’t prove that smoking pot caused the various positive outcomes but only shows correlations. He called the study irresponsible in that it took only “a snapshot in time” rather than following students to determine the long-term effects of drug use.
“In another 10 to 20 years, where will these young people be?” Koutoujian asked.
Fox News "Analysis"
An advocacy group in the United States is seizing upon a study that found students smoking marijuana can get good grades like any other student.
The Marijuana Policy Project, a national pro-pot group that wants to decriminalize marijuana, is promoting a new Swiss study finding that teens smoking pot also have strong friendships and weren't more likely to be depressed.
A state lawmaker criticized the study, calling it "academics gone wild."
"It's really outrageous," said Rep. Peter Koutoujian. "I'm appalled."
Bruce Mirken, a spokesman for the Marijuana Policy Project, hopes that the study will show that the government "twists the data to try to frighten parents about marijuana."

My grades improved significantly when I started smoking pot.
Before I smoked pot, I never did my homework.
For some reason, I started doing homework once I started smoking.
Now that I am older, I regret every minute I wasted doing my homework.
Spending my free time like that was a really stupid drug induced move.

It's only baseless because it challenges their point of view, and they don't like that. I bet they didn't even read the study, just wrote it off 'cuz it was pro-pot. Baseless my ass- I did well in high school and I smoked pot 2-3 times a day.

I smoked all through college and I am now at law school on a full scholarship.
I can't smoke as much as I used to, because of all the memorization, but over winter break I am going to fix that
light pot use keeps you in check. Daily bong rips can ruin you though, I've seen it.

My sister did great in high school and she smoked pot. no problems there. I on the other hand did not smoke at the time and I was not very interested in homework because of the lack of challenge, boring, etc.

Words of the wise...
I make better grades in upper college as well as all throughout college. Highschool I made worse grades when I wasn't smoking. Specially when I smoke (preferably vaporize) a LITTLE bit of weed. The bong can suck you in for months, years even. Before you know it you spent the last 2 years thinkining about "oh shit, i was supposed to.... fuckit, I'll do it later tonight after a nap and a fresh bong rip"
It's a medicine of use, not a drug of abuse. For those lookin to have some responsible fun, just make it recreational, not occupational.
-------------------- Teonanacatl, open up my eyes This sacrament, this prayer, beyond the world of lies Guide me clearly through that which I dont understand Give me strength to find the path Help me fight any demons as you flow through me wholely This is my prayer, that you protect me from evil, and bring me closer to peace And open up my eyes, so i can see things as you do Amen

some have said that Marijuana can actually make you smarter, and I for one do think it stimulates the brain in mysterious ways. I also noticed that I have tried to get better jobs for more money, partially because I like smoking and its not necessarily cheap, even with the schwag I smoke (which is very good in this state, hard to find craptastic schwag in Mile HIGH! but I definitely also sleep better when I am smoking.

I don't know. Maybe writing for the Boston Herald. Maybe scientists publishing studies. Maybe running their country.

Its funny, I get really good at math when high.
Without pot I would have so failed all my math tests

it must help the part of your brain that works with math, or at the very least, calms your brain to down and puts you in the mood to do it. I wish pot could help me with math!

My improvement at math with pot seems to be a function of trusting my instincts more, as well as being more careful and double-checking. When I'm sober, I'm much more likely to second-guess my method and trust my (poor) arithmetic skills.
Also geometry's easier to visualize when you're high on pot after having a few prior psych. trips under your belt. For me at least.

Pot tends to lessen my math skills marginally... not to say I become useless (I have third year calc under my belt, smoked weed through every course).
I have to agree with previous posts, it's about balance, not whether or not you use the drug. If you are using a reasonable amount that keeps your spirits high and helps you have a good time while you work you are set. If you start trying to use weed to get away from problems you'll start slippin. Same goes for any pleasure substance really, alcohol, other psychedelics- video games have been my biggest 'problem drug'.
