horse poo

Hey I've got a convention center near by that has annual horse show and theres always a giant pile of horse shit in the back 40. My question is does it matter how old the poo is. Obviously it would have decomposted considerably by now but is that good or bad. It'd be several months old by now and may just simply be dirt. Any ideas?

You want bone dry, weathered poo. You can tell if the poo is good by handing it to someone and saying: "does this dirt smell funny?" If they say anything other than no (ie: what the fuck man, thats a turd!), then the poo isnt aged enough.

YEs the manure had to be damp at some point in time (it was expelled out of a horses asshole). You just need weathered, dry poo. Take all the poo you can handle, then take it home and lay it in your backyard on a tarp. If its going to rain, make sure you cover it with another tarp. (your trying to dry it out)

several month old dry aged shit is what youre looking for. youll still probably be able to find it at your convention center but just look a little harder.

Does it matter if it's been sitting out in the elements? It's been rained on for this entire period and such.

That is what you want. Weather ages the poo and leaches it so it is just as we want it.
Check for the earthy smell

Let me say, there is absolutely nothing wrong with fresh Hpoo. That's all I use in the compost I make. And it works spectacularly. The key is rinsing it before you start the composting, a few rinses in a 5gallon bucket with a screen over top, a good overnight drain through the screen and into the compost bin it goes. Composting is easy once you get the process started. You need about a half gallon of "already" compost to add to it though( that adds the beneficial bacteria that begins the composting process) I always have composted Hpoo I'm looking to get out, PM me.

IF YOU ARE USING IT FOR COMPOST then fresh manure is BETTER than aged.
IF YOU ARE USING IT AS A SUBSTRATE (without composting) you DEFINITELY want aged manure.
