Where do you want to live?

And I don't mean some pie-in-the-sky unrealistic stuff like "my own island in the Caribbean" or something. I'm looking for realistic desires on where you want to live; whether you already live there or you want to move there. And please tell me why you like living there or why you want to live there.
My city is slowly dying and it probably isn't going to recover. There isn't much of a future here but I could live a bland, comfortable, and cheap life. I could buy a nice house out in the suburbs for $125,000 and sit around watching TV.
I fantasize about moving somewhere far away sometimes. But, I have great fears on leaving my family and friends. What if I was super-lonely and didn't meet anybody? What if I got homesick?

Just outside Portland Or.
Close enough to comfortably drive to the city, but out in the country enough to enjoy a relaxed life.

I'd like to move back to Hawai'i eventually. It's purdy.

I've never been to Denver, but I would not consider Portland to be a spread out city.
It's such a green (ecologically friendly) city, very progressive, and filled with breathtaking views. Amazing people as well.
It's my ideal city.

Well, what I meant is that a lot of Western U.S. cities are sprawling and homogenized suburban hell-holes full of Wal-marts, Targets, mini-malls, sub-divisions, office parks, and highways where everything looks the same for 200 miles.

I have never seen a wal-mart over there. Many organic stores. Even downtown has a large produce store (I forgot the name).
The entire city is littered with art. Many good sites. Fountains everywhere. A river that runs down the middle.

Quite the contrary, my friend. Portland has been a national model for cities trying to combat sprawl. It manages to have all the perks of a big city while still retaining a little small town charm.

I want to live near a metropolitan area. And, I do have a penchant for "condensed" cities where there are neighborhoods and shops and you don't have to drive 20 minutes to go do stuff.
How expensive is it to live in Portland? How's the economy?

My rent for a conveniently located 1-bedroom apartment is $545/mo. The economy's pretty good as far as I know. Doesn't have the high unemployment rate the Eugene has.

Eugene seemed kind of meth-ish when I was there.

I've thought about this a lot recently. I like where I live, but the winters are long and BRUTALLY cold (gonna be -32 on saturday) and I love warm weather so much.
I love Canada and have no desire to leave, but I don't want to spend half my life in a snow covered city. I've thought about the west coast, but they just get so much cloud and gloom... that might depress me more.
If money were no object I think I'd end up in the south of France.

I worked at a warehouse job for a year that paid $10/hr, and others told me that that was pretty lame compared to similar jobs in the area(the corporate office in Florida seemed pretty out of touch with the way things work around here). I believe Oregon has one of the highest minimum wages in the country(something like $7.50).

Definitely cheaper than CA. I can't give you a good estimate, but here's what's on craigslist:

And did I mention that we have 28 microbreweries, more than any other city in the US? Also, several local movie theaters serve beer.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I love my city. I kind of want to stay here forever but there's no future here. I would be in a time-warp stasis if I stayed.
If my city could increase its population by 250,000 and have a lot more economic activity then I would never think of leaving.

The main draw is that there seems to be a small smattering of pharmaceutical firms in the midwest.
After living in Baltimore for a couple years, it seems to me the cost of living is much lower in the midwest. In sum my desire stems from getting a high paying job with a low cost of living.

Yea Randall, talk aout a dying economy, Cleveland is at the top. So many empty factories. Steel left Cleveland it is just stuck in a rut.
Badchad cleveland area is pretty cheap living IMO. And Lake Erie is a nice, most of the time unused, commodity.

There's no future in Cleveland man...it's worse than Pittsburgh. At least in Pittsburgh we have diversified the economy with a couple of large universites and health care and such. Cleveland is just one big ghetto with empty factories and a few halfway-decent suburbs surrounding it.

If I was to move, I'd probably go for Iceland or Norway.

I've gone to the ghetto a couple of times for bud, but you gotta pick the right one. I don't go into Over The Rhine, period, but, Bond Hill, Pleasant Ridge, are a little better. Still not places to fuck around, but you can go pick up a sack real quick without some crackie jumping out of nowhere and pulling something on you.
My favorite bud spot in Cinci is my home neighborhood, Norwood. It's a white town, but it isn't uppity white kids. Lot of poor white guys around here who don't get any government cheese because they aren't black, so they resort to dealing.
How's the bud in Cleveland? I hear it's pretty good in Columbus, especially around the OSU campus. We get flooded with the Kentucky outdoor nugs down here.

I live in Columbus and go to OSU. The bud down here is fantastic! its all locally grown but alas the usual 50-60 an 8th. My best I had was called 'Mind Floss.' But there are no cheap buds to be found.
Cleveland has cheap buds that are good for the price. Like a lb can be gotten for 1000-1200 which is a excellent price for seedless regs. There is not much dank nugs operations goin on though, so you gotta know the grower personally for the most part.

yeah well it's still bible belt right? I don't want to go to prison for murder because
blacks called 'cowboy', others that prefer country music to hip hop/R&B and more that like rock... the first free black settlement is just down the road from me, most of those families still live here...it's a whole different world.

While that may be true, it's also so true that cities vary greatly what may hold true in one town will not at all in the other, but I understand what you are saying.

I would like to live at one of the big mountains in Colorado or Washington, something like Baker or Veil. I could get a job as a teacher maybe; ride all day, party all night.

Kinda the same deal down here. The 50-60 an eighth type shit goes around down here, but most potheads don't make enough money for that shit (myself included), so the market for it is understandably small. It isn't too hard to find seedless or next to seedless outdoor regs down here, though winter is always a shit time for bud. Kentucky outdoor is the main smoke around here, though i've seen canadian shit going around a lot too. Thankfully, nobody here buys mexican dirt, so it isn't all over the place like it is in some places.
If the shit in Columbus is as good as you say it is, I may need to take a roadtrip up there and check this shit out, even if it is 50-60 an eight shit. Are there spots where dealers can be found up there, or do you sort of just have to know someone?

Yeah, worth a shot. I was hoping to head up to OSU sometime soon for a weekend of partying anyway, hopefully some of the good shit will go around at a kegger. Maybe go up to the headshop, pick up a new pipe and hassle the white rastas that come in for a connect.

I'm really into where I am living right now. I live in a town on the outskirts of Toronto. 20 minute drive to get to the core of the city, and in the opposite direction there are farmers markets, forests, lakes and trails. It's really the best of both worlds.
I would like to try new things tho. I tend to move around quite a bit...but I always end up coming back to this area. I would like to live in Newfoundland for the east coast experience...I would like to live downtown TO for a little while, maybe Montreal and learn me some good french.

No, all the people around here either stay in Cincinnati or leave Ohio altogether.
Where's the best party spots, bars and clubs and all that lovely shit? Inquiring minds want to know.

there are tons of bars around here. tons of house parties. I mean it is one of the biggest party schools in the country. You could honestly walk into random parties and get drunk because there will be 100+ people pouring out onto the yard and you fit right in.

I live in New York (Queens) now, so I am pretty good. But I am getting tired of how commercial and absolutely isolating it is (you dont know your neighbors, you dont know the guy behind the counter in the local shops, no more organic stores, unless you want to pay triple prices for "good" food) Since all of my family lives in NY - the probability of me moving is low, plus I own a home here, so I dont think Im going to give that up. BUT if the opportunity arises to move to Boston, or Montreal, I would seriously consider it. Boston is beautiful big town, but less dirty than NYC. Montreal because it is as European as you can get w/o living in Europe. OoD

I live in Seattle now and love it but where I'd really like to live is SE Alaska, maybe Juneau, Ketchikan, Sitka, or Haines. I love the maritime climate and snow just an hour's drive into the mountains.

New Zealand, i don't care where in New Zealand (although preferably somewhere on the North Island) as long as it's New Zealand. it's just a beautiful country. i'd ideally like to have a small amount of land with sheeps and goats and maybe even a pig, not to mention dogs and cats. i've wanted to live there since i was 6 and saw a picture of some place in New Zealand (forget where exactly, it's been a long time). but that picture was burned into my mind and i decided then that that was where i wanted to be.
i'll make it happen one of these days.
