Lay out a plan. Be stubbornly dedicated to it.
That has worked for me.

I have read a few 'success' books, and was involved in quite a few of these types of presentations.
They have all said what chad said. Having a plan is key.

I'm in the same boat. I'm probably going to get a real job soon. I'm sure I'll be stressed out and miserable, but if I don't do it then I'll be a loser forever.

I'm not done with life yet, but thus far I feel i've been successful.
I graduated with a 3.34, and a 1210 on the SATs. Got a $12,000 academic scholarship to my current university. I have a 3.6 GPA and am double majoring in Business Management and Economics.
I'm a student senator on the External University Affairs Committee and a member of Students in Free Enterprise. I tutor principles of micro/macro students once a week.
This summer I'll be living in DC as part of an internship program (www.dcinternships.org), I'll intern ~30hr/week at a business the program sets me up with, and they enroll me in 3 classes at Georgetown over the summer.
I'll be graduating in Fall '08 and will be starting at either Georgetown or UVA to get my MBA in Spring '09.
The ONLY thing that has allowed me to do all that, and believe me - my workload is light compared to many involved people on campus, is proper TIME MANAGEMENT.
If you can't schedule what you plan to do, and when, then odds are you won't end up doing it as quickly or efficiently as you could have. Life is a business, run it well.

save 15% of your income no matter where you work. if you can do that for one year, even when working shitty jobs, you will have what it takes to be successful in life.
(ps: this has less to do with the money and more to do with accomplishing a task that delays pleasure.)

I feel I'm pretty successful when compared to people my age.
No, I don't have a college degree, but I do have a job that pays more than the average family's income for my area.
My "secret"?
start from the bottom and work your way up. For the most part, experience is key. Unless you have a passion to do something that will absolutely require college, like being a doctor, pharmacist, etc... you can find a career path where experience counts. An easy one? Telecom. It sucks major ass, but there is so much potential to make money. Be a phone monkey for a year, learn all the processes and lingo and how things work, then go on to bigger things.
don't be afraid of responsibility
and uhm, don't be lazy.
That's all I can think of.

ok so I've done alright. I basically was going to college living the dream getting drunk laid doin blow pulling the easy 3.0 GPA - my grandma was paying for it - she died suddenly unexpected - my aunt got the money from my grandma no money left for school I asked to borrow some "NO" so I dropped out of college middle of junior year only 3 semesters yet very disappointing situation, no money and loans were not getting accepted because my parents had money but were going through bankruptcy so the had none to give but lots on paper, so I was fucked.
what did I do? I got a full time job using my partial degree and recommendation from my teacher, then I got 2 part time jobs to supplement my income working a total of 70 hours a week. I did this for a little over 1 year I worked a $15 hour landscape contracting job, delivered pizzas, and sold car washes to people at a car wash place. Well my hardwork paid off and living in a $200 efficiency for year I was able to put away $45k and buy my own place. i bought the house in 2005 - nice older cabin but on 2 acres on a creek in National Forest in Colorado so fuckin sweet right about 1800 square feet which is plenty for one person + dog.
anyways 2006 I chilled out with work (working a lot on the new house I bought - it needs tons of work) and moved to better job in the landscape construction field which got me up to $32k salary a decent 8-5gig with 3 months of paid unemployment in the winter. well I realized my boss was nobody special and with commitment and energy I could do the same thing as him. In the middle of 2006 I decided I had better starting generating income for this venture and I got into eBay reselling of large lots of vitamins and a few other profitable things I won't mention - anyways that brought in $4,000 for me to start my own landscape construction company in 2007
well i have followed through with my company - a good friend of mine gave me his dedicated work all summer not calling in sick even one day. i did everything to the book following, tax, insurance, licensing rules, did not cut any corners. well we did $350,000 in business our first year and have contracts for $100K next summer. I own a skid steer, a few trailers and dump trucks after starting with NOTHING this shit is not on payments I own it outright. Oh yeah we have 3 full time employees currently too. I just squashed over $30k off my mortage just this summer plus I'm remodeling everything in sight since I have good workers.
And I used to be some lazy pothead, I have more than one felony on my record and been to prison, I just turned 26 years old and I've had some good relationships with beautiful women. In college I spent my summers living in sandals camping creekside in the woods growing dope or touring with String Cheese Incident one summer I never expected to be where I am today I just committed myself tried my absolute fucking hardest every moment and it's all panned out, could not be so happy.
I would like to go back to school but I've been really successful and the landscape construction field very little people care about degrees but more so the finished product which I feel we deliver quite well.
Also, I would like to agree strongly that TIME MANAGEMENT is a key to success. Like I only talk on the phone when I'm really busy when I'm doing something else product like shopping at store, driving truck, waiting in line, etc. Then I make extensive errand lists and do my best to combine trips, stock up on common needed things, etc

The secret to success? GO TO SCHOOL.
The trick isn't to work hard, it's to work smart. If you're going to work smart, you're going to need some kind of education backing you up. In my experience, it's a rare case of success that didn't involve schooling.
I work hard. It doesn't get me far.

You know me 40, so you probably already know I don't have a lot of advice to offer. I've never been a success minded person. But "success" is different things to different people. In my world success equals happiness. And happiness is not reliant on money, fame, or material things. By my standards I feel I have been fairly successful in life so far...but the truth is I'll probably die penniless with a smile on my face. I do enjoy life every day though, and for that I feel I have acheived greatness in my own way.
...or maybe I'm just a lazy, happy-ass motherfucker who's too easily amused. Works for me!

Well, this is true. But i don't think enjoying the journey and arriving at success are in opposition.
Do BOTH. If you are successful, but don't enjoy your life, you'll end up old and unhappy with a huge house that will scare the neighborhood children.
And if you are happy with no lasting success, then you'll just be a burned out hippie that lives in a one room efficiency eating rice and listening to the same music you've been listening to for 30 years.
And not just success as in money. Success as in the thing you want from life. If you want to be a burned out hippie or a crazy old bat, then so be it.
-------------------- "To do right is to know what you want. Now when you are dissatisfied with yourself it's because you are after something you don't really want. What objects are you proposing to yourself? Are they the objects you really value? If they are not, you are cheating yourself. I don't meant that if you chose to pursue the objects you most value, you will attain them; of course not. Your experience will tell you that. But success in getting after much labor what you really don't care for is the bitterest and most ridiculous failure." -George Santayana

My take:
A) Be self employed. Virtually everyone I know that enjoys solid financial success is self-employed. I would rather make 50K a year cleaning toilets for my own business than making 100K a year working for the man.
B) Stop spending $$ on stupid shit. Many people (especially the younger set) buy things to impress the opposite sex or their friends. This is a vicious treadmill; jump off it immediately.
Example: That expensive wardrobe you buy to look fly is going to be out of style and ridiculous looking in 3-5 years.
Just say no to spending money foolishly.
That about covers it.
