Possible Contamination?
    #7719931 - 12/05/07 02:36 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

Hello all.

This is my first grow, and I have the suspicion that I may just be being neurotic, but I figure better safe than sorry. I set up four jars following the instructions in this guide. They've been going for just about two weeks. I noticed this yellow area on the mycelium in one of the jars yesterday.

Contamination? Metabolites? I apologize for the quality of the picture, but the webcam is all I have at the moment.

nope not contamed, why isnt there foil on the lid?
That jar is way too wet, it is doubptful that rhizomorphs will grow.
it will colonize real slow but it is fine.
That yellow stuff is common with realy wet cakes. i do not think that it is mycelium piss but it IS FINE

Oh god I did not put the foil back on after injecting them. I took the guide at face value and assumed it was only necessary for the sterilization. I have made a fool out of myself in two posts. This is a new internet record for me.

Stupid question: is this whole operation a total do-over, or is there any hope of salvaging them?

(Also, thank you.)

are all your cakes like that? If it colonizes then you will be fine. Just dont crumble those cakes and try to case them. The centers will not colonize until after a flush and the cakes dry out a bit.

Keep your jars out of the water when pc'ing them.
Keeping the foil on after inoculating them isnt a bad idea but isnt 100% nessecery. If the cake is done right you do not need the foil afteerwards but it still isnt a bad idea to keep it on.
In your case if your verm layer is good and you stop fucking with them I would leave it off to help them dry out. But since your cake is soaked i assume it compressed also and the verm layer is loose and contams can fall straight through the holes and hit the cake. So just leave them for a week and do not touch.

Ah, that's a relief. I will leave them alone.

are all your cakes like that?
What exactly am I comparing? They don't look particularly moist to the untrained eye, so how would I judge the wetness?

The yellow junk is only present in the one jar, and the mycelium appears to have spread much further in the other jars.

Is there ropey strands/rhizomorphs in the other jars. it sounds like there is. IN the picture the I can see rhizos but they are short.
In the picture the cake looks like a heavy lump of dough.
I assume the other ones have nook and crannies all over.
can you physicaly feel that this jar is heavier then the others?
I bet the rest are okay and this one should be fine

Ohh I see what you mean. Yes, the others are less doughy, have nooks and crannies all over and are significantly lighter than the one in the photo. One jar has a larger amount of rhizomorphs than the others, but they are present in all the jars.
