lots of different plants are started on agar through tissue culturing, there are also lots of different kinds of agar and additives

i use to buy orchids by the flask which was 50-100 plants on agar from tissue culturing

you can surface sterilize seeds in bleach, and wash in etoh, and rinse in sterile water.

Then place them in culkture.

If the seeds of interest are still in the fruit (pod or whatever), its even easier. You can sterilze with high concentration of bleach and then cut open the fruit in sterile conditions and pull out seeds.

Seeds in an unopened pod should be sterile.

good luck

kinda funny you mention... Although ferns don't have seeds, they have spores. My botany class lab is doing a project with culturing ferns on agar. The supplies and everything are in a package called "C Fern" and it's produced by some scientific product company. we're doing studies on genetics, and some other random stuff.

1% agar agar with water works well for germinating many seeds. In addition to the seed sterilization techniques mentioned above, just be prepared to prick out germinating seeds into a proper medium in a timely manner.

1% is sufficient for solidifying?

I imagine its only 1% because with normal seeds they don't need to be totally solid.

With orchids you need to add nutrients and hormones to the mix
