I been trying to prepare grain a few different ways and i found that running a blowdryer over your grains before loading them into the PC sped up colonization quite a bit.
I did it on my last set of jars and i actually noticed those jars were the quickest.

I agree, if blowdrying them sped colonization you were trying to cook them too wet on previous runs.

Yeh man im not sure wut kind of grains ur using wbs, or berries, or even sumthin else. And i have definantly never herd of using a blow dryer b4 although i do c how it could help.it does however sound like they may be a bit water logged or even just covered in some xtra wetness. Normally i take and shake my grain(wheat berries) in a strainer while it still hot to steam off the extra moisture(Roger Rabbit's method). Somtimes i just dont have time to do that to all of it so then ill just nuke them in the microwave for a few mins then pull em out and stirr em up good and pop em bak in the mic for a few min again, until they r sufficiently dry. Scince i have started to do this i have had excellent results. Just use wut ever works best for you man.

I found that using a heat gun on WBS was esential to getting a good moisture content but rye is so much more foolproof that Ill never use wbs again.. thanx to Bobs Red Mill!!!!!!!!! 25lbs delivered to my door for $20 How can you top that???

Not trying to sound like a smart ass, but 40# bags of WBS at petsmart for $8 top that with ease.
If your having trouble with WBS your either not soaking it long enough or not draining it long enough.
Minimum 24 hour soak, rinse thoroughly, then 30 minute drain.
Works every time.

Me too... 30 minutes is never enough. i suspect its the strainer though. the middle grains will always be much more moist than the top.

Yeah, it's ideal when the grain has absorbed as much moisture as it can but the outside remains dry. You can do this just by boiling the water at the end of your soak and putting it straight into a strainer, shaking hard every few mins -- all the outside moisture will steam away, leaving the outside dry. Works perfect every time... you can see it in action on RR's DVD, along with some other good hints for working with grain.

OH I agree but if you read the next few posts after yours, you get my drift , wbs is cost efficient but there's more work involved to get it right..
how bout this
2myco bags some rye berries two spore syringes coir coffee a PC a rubber maid container(monotub)
and I guarantee a newbie could cultivate about 4-5 ounces within a 3 month period with a 15% failure rate ( and I think thats high)
my point is I look for things that are EASY to work with in this hobby I moving on to pans and I don't want to have to worry about moisture content (there are too many other things to go wrong , and I would that not be one of them)
