People Still Cited For Pot Despite Initiative December 4, 2007 - cbs4denver.com
Voters in Denver decided that possession of less than an ounce of marijuana should be the lowest priority for law enforcement and the city is taking steps to implement the law, but in the meantime, people are still getting arrest summons. Denver City Attorney David Fine said his understanding is police do not target individuals for possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, but will give a citation if some other offense is occurring.
However, citations for marijuana possession are still being given out by Denver police. One was recorded recently at Civic Center Park on a cell phone camera. The man was also cited for having paraphernalia.
Last April 20, as is customarily the case on that date, people smoked pot openly in Civic Center Park. Then, Denver police gave out summons by the dozens for offenses that included possession.
In November, voters approved an initiative to make possession of less than an ounce of marijuana the city's "lowest law enforcement priority." But Fine said nothing has changed since then.
"The same low law enforcement priority that we have accorded this issue prior to the vote," Fine said. "So we will adhere and respect the vote of the people."
A committee to implement the initiative is being formed including people from City Council, the city attorney, Denver police, a domestic violence advocate, drug counselors, defense attorneys and those who sponsored the initiative. "I think partially it is," marijuana initiative sponsor Mason Tvert said about the will of the people being followed. "They're putting together this panel the people have requested to study issue and ensure this measure is being implemented. But at same time, they're not stopping the arrests and citations and they are continuing to prosecute people." The initiative sponsors insist the purpose of it is to allow people to smoke privately in their homes and not in the open like in Civic Center Park.
Next week a Metro State student will go to court on marijuana possession charges. She said she faces loss of her financial aid if convicted.

Of course they're going to keep giving out charges, it's the easiest way for those bastards to make their money.
Let's take a girl's financial aid away, not allowing her to go to college anymore because she'll be too busy paying fines, all for all of two grams so we can get paid over time!
Sounds like an awesome idea.

I've gotten a pot ticket in Colorado and showed up for court did things correctly and took a plea bargain for a lesser drug para. charge and only paid $42 and met a very cute girl while standing in line who became my girlfriend for like 10 months thats fuckin karma for you.
so to say the police are making much off $42 arrests they could write traffic or dot infractions on semi's and shit way better than that, plus they CANNOT even ARREST you in Colorado for possession only write you a ticket, I fuckin love that.
if they are looking to hem you up they will hem you up, i've had a two officers simply ask me to dispose of my marijuana and by stepping on it on the ground so this must be a support measure as both officers basically had me dump out my nuggets and step on them and even let me keep the container (to fill again)
