Gypsum
    #7717402 - 12/04/07 08:50 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

After reading the several uses for gypsum im wondering if taking drywall sheets and breaking it up would be fine. Because most home improvement type stores like lowes for example will give away the cuttings of drywall for free.

Gypsum is calcium sulphate, same as the main constituent of drywall. Just make sure there are no paper remnants remaining in the mix when you use it.

some drywall has a fungicide mixed in. depending on where you live, it might be all they sell, such as if you live on the cost, or realy humid and hot places.

the anti-fungal gypsum is also called greenboard. the greenboard is used in bathroomsand places with high humidity to prevent mold and mildew from growing on the sheetrock. as long as the drywall you use isn't green, you should be fine. by the way, work @ lowe's. that's how i know.

The horticultural grade gypsum I get here is obviously a biproduct of the drywall industry. It has lots of pieces of white and brown paper mixed in, just like sheetrock. I think it's the broken pieces from the manufacturing process that they chop up and put into bags. It works great. Remove the paper, but don't get too anal about a few scraps you might miss. The mycelium will colonize them easily.
