500 gig external hard drive..which brand is best?

I desperatly need more space, and I've decided to go external, since my computer is crap and i dont want to put anything new into it when I'll probably just get a new one soon anyway...
but for now I've decided a 500 gig should be sufficient, although those 1 TB drives sound pretty sexy (and expensive)
I'm leaning towards the Cavalry CAXM37500 3.5-Inch 500GB SATA External Hard Drive, but I was also looking at Western Digital WDG1U5000 My Book Essential Edition 500 GB Hard Drive and the LaCie 500 GB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive
any advice or suggestions?

I would suggest western digital, I have built over a dozen computers and only used western digital hard drives and I have never been disappointed.

Whats your price range? You can get a 750 gb external drive for a little less than 200 dollars.

There are a few options on this page. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2000150414+4017&name=%24100+-+%24200 The 750 gb ones under 200 seem to be from lesser known companies if that matters to you.

From my years of experience building computers, all the ones I have made with seagate hard drives have not failed. You'd think by now statistically I'd be disproved, but nope.
All hard drives, due to their very nature, must fail. But seagates at the very least fare better than the competition.

Best bet is to buy a hard drive and put it in an external enclosure. Although it may not be much consolation but if you buy the ones you’ve listed, you only get a 1 year warranty.
As far as brands, I've been happy with Western Digital.

I've found the same thing... Seagate hard drives hardly ever fail. I saw two Western Digital hard drives crash while working a computer job over the summer. I'll be avoiding them.
As far as external HD's go, from the reviews I've read, avoid LaCie. They seem to crash shortly after the warranty is up. Not sure about that though, the lab I work in uses all LaCie to back up their experimental data. They seem to be content with them.
I was thinking about getting this 500GB HDD: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3289332&body=MAIN
Does anyone know if Iomega actually makes hard drives, or are they buying the hard drive from another company and slapping their brand on it? If they do make hard drives, what's their track record like?

I have only good things to say about the WD my book series. But I only own 250gb and 320gb ones. I'll be buying another 320gb in a few days I think. I'd buy one with more space, but if I were to lose 500-1000gb of data, I'd probably go on a killing spree .

Yeah, thats my biggest fear. You'd think they'd eventually stop making hard drives so large. Loosing 500GB worth of data would be disastrous for anyone.

That's why I want to be very careful about the drive I get...
I'm thinking this one after reading the reviews. The Cavalry CAXM37500 3.5-Inch 500GB SATA External Hard Drive but there was on review saying it turned to a brick after a year... so...would this seagate be a better choice?

You can find the 500gig Western Digitals for around $100 if you look for'em on the net
That is a steal. Don't bother with the 750's, they're still overpriced.

Most decent mobos also come with on-board RAID too... so if you set up a mirror (RAID 1) and you lose a disk, it's no big deal.

One thing I always do first when reading reviews is read the negative ones. The majority of negative reviews on technology are left by computer and technology illiterate fucktards. If I read a lot of bad reviews from tech-minded people who actually know what they're talking about, I avoid the product.
Most of the negative reviews for that drive seem to be written by people who know what they're doing. And about 1/4 of the reviews are 3 or below. I'll pass on that drive.
