that's called empathy, not synesthesia.
this is what were talking about:
Synesthesia (also spelled synæsthesia or synaesthesia, plural synesthesiae or synaesthesiae)—from the Ancient Greek σύν (syn), meaning "with," and αἴσθησις (aisthēsis), meaning "sensation"'—is a neurologically based phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway. In one common form of synesthesia, known as grapheme → color synesthesia, letters or numbers are perceived as inherently colored, while in ordinal linguistic personification, numbers, days of the week and months of the year evoke personalities. In spatial-sequence, or number form synesthesia, numbers, months of the year, and/or days of the week elicit precise locations in space (for example, 1980 may be "farther away" than 1990), or may have a three-dimensional view of a year as a map (clockwise or counterclockwise).
While cross-sensory metaphors (e.g., "loud shirt", "bitter wind" or "prickly laugh") are sometimes described as "synesthetic", true neurological synesthesia is involuntary.

Lets see there was just recently a report on the condition on cbc. The symptoms were feeling things other people were actually feeling. Or replacing numbers with colors. They did a test were they had 10 patients. 5 on 1 side of a table and 5 on the other side. They had them place there hands under the table so they could not see who was being poked. They poked 5 people and all 10 people felt the pain.

It's when the sensory pathways in your brain get rerouted because of neurotransmitter displacement. You start to taste colors and smell sounds, etc. Has nothing to do with other people, just yourself.

synesthesia deals with the senses, like the sense of smell, sight, taste and so on. so get yer facts straight.

Synesthesia has nothing to do with other people. You can easily experience it alone.

Someone should develope a chemical that generates synesthesia with very little other effects. Probably one of the tryptamines. Let's go bug the people over in Chem and Pharm!

Right on.
Actually...I've always wondered, if there was such thing as a psychedelic that produced effects without any sort of 'stoned' effect, wouldn't the trip be a bit to close to reality and have a high propensity for making you nutty?

One of the interesting tryptamines that comes to mind when your talking about the senses is DiPT. It's effects are mainly audial from what I've read, very little visual distortion/hallucinations.
Little off topic, and not exactly synesthesia, but interesting nonetheless.

I would be very curious to see (hear?) firsthand what DiPT was like. I wouldn't be surprised if it did have that "other dimension" feeling that you get with all the other psychedels.
We need a chemical that leaves emotions and thought processes completely intact, but goes havoc with all the senses.
