Loaded lyrics

Study shows many popular songs that kids listen to are packed with references to drugs and drinking

Utah public school teachers, on average, spend about 70 minutes a month talking to students about substance abuse, according to the University of Utah's Social Research Institute.

But a national study released in November said children spend much more than 70 minutes a day listening to popular music. And a lot of that music talks about drinking, drugs and tobacco without mentioning the negative consequences.

At the annual meeting of the American Public Health Association in early November, researchers from the University of Pittsburgh presented results of a study in which they analyzed the lyrics of the 279 most popular songs of 2005.

One of every three songs contained some reference to substance abuse, said the leader of the study, physician Brian Primack.

Different genres produced different results, he said. Rap was the biggest offender: 86 percent of the songs contained a reference to drugs or alcohol. So did 37 percent of country songs. Pop music came in last, with only 12 percent mentioning alcohol, drugs or tobacco.
Primack said researchers didn't try to determine a link between song lyrics and listeners' substance use. But parents worry that continued exposure to drug-laden lyrics will make drug use seem acceptable.

"I'm very concerned about the lyrics," said DeeAnn Cervantez, a Salt Lake City mother whose four kids range from 7 to 18 years. "It influences the way they talk. They repeat what they hear. I don't think they mimic it, but it might make them more [susceptible to smoking or drug use]."

Tammy Vasic, of Salt Lake City, has five kids between the ages of 3 and 20. She recently caught two of her older children playing inappropriate music in the presence of her 10- and 3-year-old, she said, and was "appalled" at the "atrocious" lyrics.

"[Her older kids] said [the younger kids] weren't understanding it," Vasic said. "But they were exposed to it."

Easy target: Just listening to lyrics about smoking pot won't cause deviant behavior, said Doug Thorburn, a California-based alcoholism researcher and author of Alcoholism Myths and Realities.

"The musical tastes of Charles Whitman, who gunned down dozens of people from a bell tower in Texas in 1966, were never mentioned," Thorburn said in an e-mail. "Odds are, his musical preferences were country/western, which have never been blamed for craziness, sexual deviancy or murder, even though the lyrics often reference alcohol or heavy drinking."

Thorburn quoted Frank Zappa, the late musician who once battled Tipper Gore over advisory labels on albums: "There are more love songs than anything else. If songs could make you do something, we'd all love one another."

Geoff Tate, lead singer of the multi-platinum rock band Queensryche, agreed that musicians can't be blamed for fan behavior.

"People make their own choices," Tate said. "There's nobody to blame but yourself . . . Substance abuse is something that will never go away. It's rebellion and 'Just Say No' doesn't work."

Sam Peake, 19, who was eating at The Gateway's food court recently with friend Tsering Dawa, said music lyrics don't influence his behavior.

"I don't think the music is what makes you smoke weed," said Peake, adding that he listens to rap but doesn't do drugs.

"I listen to rap all the time, but I don't do drugs," agreed Dawa, 19. If he ever chose to drink or do drugs, he joked, it certainly wouldn't be because a rapper told him to.

But other people believe that music does influence kids, even if only subconsciously.

"The music people listen to, especially with references to substance abuse, certainly negatively influences listeners by weakening their resistance and subconsciously increasing its acceptance," said Paul F. Davis, a Florida-based licensed minister and author of such books as United States of Arrogance.

"Teens who use drugs and get drunk aren't listening to opera or classical music as they party," Davis said in an interview conducted via e-mail.

Message sells: West Coast rap producer Quincy Jones III, who's worked with Ice Cube and Tupac Shakur, said music labels promote rappers who glorify substance use because artists like Dr. Dre - whose album "The Chronic" got its name from slang for marijuana - and N.W.A. have sold millions of units to white America.

Such lyrics, prevalent on radio, scare parents who are trying to teach impressionable children to not smoke, drink or use drugs, parents say.

"Our kids are definitely monitored," said Chris Paulson, a mother of a 13-year-old, 11-year-old and 10-year-old from Pocatello, Idaho, who visited Salt Lake City recently to see "High School Musical: The Ice Tour."

She appreciates clean versions of albums sold at Wal-Mart, but said the Internet makes it easy for kids to get inappropriate songs. Paulson banned iTunes after one of her children downloaded a song that had references to substance abuse, she said.

Such parent involvement is key, said Daniel Buccino, an assistant professor at John Hopkins' Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences.

"Kids are very influenced by their peer group," Buccino said. "Parents need to monitor who their kids hang out with."

State program: Verne Larsen, Utah's coordinator of the Safe and Drug-Free School program, said most Utah schools participate in a state program called "Prevention Dimension," which features both specific anti-drug education and ways teachers can implement anti-drug messages in other courses.

Another program involves a music CD called "Mind Over Matter" given to grade-schoolers across Utah, usually in fourth-grade. The CD features seven kid-friendly songs that tell students not to use drugs or alcohol. A sample from a song called "10-21": "There's an age range, ooo ahh, Where statistics show, woh oh oh oh, That any kind of drinking kills your brain cells, Oh no."

Simplistic, yes, but there's evidence it works, said Rodney Hopkins, research assistant professor at the University of Utah's Social Research Institute. These songs reference substance use - but they list the consequences and urge listeners to make smart choices.

"We've been making headway," Hopkins said. An institute survey during last school year found that

98 percent of parents surveyed said their child had listened to the CD and 85 percent of parents set clear rules about substance use after listening to the CD with their children.

LYRICS

Lyrics in every genre pose threat to impressionable ears

The researchers who determined that one out of every three popular music songs contains a substance use reference studied lyrics from the most popular songs of 2005 as determined by Billboard.

A quick study of the top songs in 2005 reveal numbers that closely mirror those of the researchers.

The top 10 songs of 2005, according to Billboard, were, in order, Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together," Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl," Mario's "Let Me Love You," Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone," Ciara's "1, 2 Step," Kanye West's "Gold Digger," Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," 50 Cent's "Candy Shop," the Pussycat Dolls' "Don't Cha," and Clarkson's "Behind These Hazel Eyes."

Three of those songs - "Gold Digger," "Candy Shop," and "Don't Cha" - contain substance-use references. (The Pussycat Dolls' full-length version of "Don't Cha," featuring a rap by Busta Rhymes, was studied.) All three songs are rap or include rap.

(However, while sometimes a banana is just a banana, 50 Cent's reference to sipping champagne is a euphemism for a sexual act.) Out of the top 10 country songs of 2005, four reference substance use. And out of the 10 top rap tracks of 2005, nine reference substance use.

(The lone hold-out of the rap artists is Bow Wow's "Like You," but at the time he was only 18.)

Not to my knowledge, but I mostly listen to stuff from Norway, Finland, Sweden, Netherlands and the likes. Very few decent American metal bands out there imho.

I was gonna say I was thinking that was either the Crap ass Neo-punk movment that woulden't know punk if it hit them upside their head with a 40oz, or the emo movement.

I've passed pipes with people on stage at a couple metal concerts.
Not to mention Gwar killing people on stage with crack rocks, and large syringes of heroin
