Used to be Good now I suck

Recently I have not had any success growing. I used to be good but now I suck. My jars never fully colonize and because they take so long they get contaminated. Also My jar tops never seem to work. Polyfill with a small hole in the middle didnt work, Postal Tyvek with just the ring didnt work, and I am interested in buying plastic lids but dont know what type of filtration to use for WBS. Also what can stop mycelium growth? I use a tit kept at about 80, a presto pressure cooker, and self healing silcone injection site with tyvek. Hopefully this will give a good start for my situation and hopefully with everyone's help I can get back ont track. Thank you all.

The only time i have had trouble with wild bird seed is when I got lazy preparing it.
If you don't see the contam they could have some kind of bacterial infection.
If you are not skipping steps while preparing your grain try a new brand of bird seed.

Long colonization is usually caused by OVERHYDRATION (too much water.) Make sure your WBS is nearly dry to the touch before loading it in the jars - they should only have moisture on the INSIDE, not on the outside.
USPS Tyvek has always worked great for me.... I use high-temp RTV silicone for self-healing injection sites as well.

A couple of 1/4 holes (covered with Tyvek of course) has been fine for me. I don't glue the Tyvek to the lid, I just put the Tyvek under the lid (screw the ring over the Tyvek.)
Bird Basics brand, under $10 for 40lbs at PetSmart.
Prepared by simmering in a large pot until hydrated (I know mines done when I can put a dent in the kernels with my [very short] fingernail.) Then it's strained, and tossed while hot to evaporate as much water as possible, and only loaded once the kernels are dry on the outside (takes a while to strain/dry).

Try those lids out. Very detailed instructions how to make good self sealing lids for almost nothing.

As already stated, it sounds as though your WBS is too wet, which is leading to slow colonization. Try letting it drain for 2-4 hours before loading it into your jars, maybe even longer!
Try checking this link for more information.
Also, combine the lids, the tyvek, and the rings. It has always worked for me. First poke an air hole (about the size of your middle finger at the first joint) in the top of the lid, and then nail another hole into the lid to act as an injection port. Then cut out a round piece of Tyvek and put it evenly over the lid, and then hold it in place and screw the ring on. Wrap in tinfoil and pressure cook. These lids have never failed me. Just put a piece of micropore tape over the injection site after you inoculate and you'll be golden.
These lids allow you to shake without messing up the Tyvek, and provide plenty of gas exchange to aid in colonization.
Oh, and I use Pennington's WBS, however any WBS mixture should work fine. What are you using right now?

Where do I get Micropore tape? Chi Ro do u have a pic of your lids? I have a hard time visualizing the way the jars come together. Also wouldnt the tyvek get wet still when you shook the jars since it is exposed at the larger hole? Glacier Creek I do understand how that tiny pinhole provides enough gas exchange in the tutorial you posted and I couldnt understand exactly what the process was. Thank you for the help sorry I have a thick skull. Does anyone know where to just buy those plastic lids with the injection ports and air exchangers? Also I let my seed dry for 3 hours before pcing so that shouldnt be a problem.

Just my 2 cents. But I've also been having issues lately after many successful runs. My slow colonization has been caused by chronic dehydration though. Now that winter has hit my new place is ridiculously dry. Heck it dries ME out overnight, so jars sitting for weeks visually lose size due to dehydration.
I've also experimented with various grains for as substrates. Sometimes just switching brands of grain makes a big difference. I once found a brand of WBS that wouldn't colonize at ALL. Must have had anti fungals in it or something.
In regards to hole for gas exchange, heck I've found one tiny 1/4 inch hole used for injection does just fine. They don't need much air while colonizing, unlike fruiting, just enough to diffuse out high concentrations of CO2. I've seen a lot of lids with 4 - 1/8th holes; just big enough to inject along all 4 sides.

You can buy Micropore tape at most drug stores. I buy mine at a supermarket. I have had the same problem with wbs. When I dont let it dry for 24hrs it can take forever to colonize. I have learned that following the prep steps. is the golden rule.

yes you can find micropore tape in most drug stores and first aid sections of stores.
it is a surgical tape for bandages.
do not confuse it with regular bandage tape...there is a difference.

they work great I've been using them for years.
I recall seeing them at one of the Shroomery Vendor's sites...
but I can't remember which one right off hand.
but agar is missing in action...
so I wouldn't order them from his site.

agar and I have been good friends for many years.
I was a beta tester for agar ...
he would send me products to test out...
and if I liked them he would send me a crap load of them to use...
for free!~

I've tested out several of his jar lids over the years...
each one improved over the one used before.
his last lid design with the "Whatman Filter Device" is almost bullet proof....IMHO

If I were to use the synthetic filter discs from mycosupply could i just put a lil silicone on one of those for injection and only use the metal ring without drying out the jar?
