wicking water into cakes?
    #7714390 - 12/04/07 08:59 AM (16 years, 1 month ago)

anyone ever try placing a cake in shallow water for it to wick up when it needed to be drawn upon. i have had mushies pin quite easily during the 24 hour dunk. could it work if it was in a h2o2 mix. maybe another bad idea. but hey i try.

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

Don't dunk mycelium into H2O2 solutions unless they're short-term dunks, otherwise the solution WILL oxidize the mycelium and break it apart.

You could try this, but chances are good that it's just an invitation for an infection. My guess is that you'd have a sloppy mess of metabolites and water at the bottom of your cake.

I've been recommending that for quite some time now. Here's a thread from yesterday. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/7713344#Post7713344 and another thread from a few months ago. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/7368054#Post7368054

shoot, read the mmgg and they say to put a straw in it and fill with water.
This goes way back to the late 90's. i used to do it all the time with the pf cakes. Now I will spend ten minutes to find the pics

My first grow

I cant find the pics of the front view, it is a popular pic
a later grow

notice the straws

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

so what kind of cleaning did you do with the straws?
could you tell me if you ran into any prolems at all with the straws i presently have pes hawian and costa rican and they tend to flush toward the bottom of the cakes but that may just be because of my low humidity........................................................................is everyone elses cakes damp to the touch through out the flush?

as long as it doesn't directly touch pins i don't see why i wouldn't work. pre-installing a wick would be interesting, i have knocked up some jars with hollow vermiculite cavities in the center recently and they are colonizing as we speak. im planing on stacking 2 1/2 pints and comparing it to a single pint cake without a cavity that was knocked up with the same strain and syringe.

hopefully the hollow cavities will work wonders when dunked and rolled.

cheers,
bzl
