why do my cake flushes suck

I have had a hard time getting good flushes from my cakes. They seem to dry out i feel theat the perlite is not keeping them damp enough. i have been getting aborts and scrony look mushies. they try to flush after a good dunk. however i am not sure what causes them to stop. they are sitting on 5 inches of perlite with about an 1\8 inch hole every 1 inch and a half. some of the mushies form a lite coat of mycelem (or what appears to be) over the cap. i fan them 3 to five times a day and they are at 74degrees constent. sorry for just throwing all my info out in such an unorganized fashion. thanks to those that help.

is mycelem on the cap a sign of low humidity or low air flow? what do the mushrooms do under these conditions?

I have a question for you or anyone for that matter, can you dunk a cake that is pinning? I assume it's not a good idea.

Q. why do my cake flushes suck? A. Because there cakes.
Next time case your cakes or move up to grain.

cakes suck, I recommend you try something like a monotub (very simple) or try casing.

thats my plan and it is in the makings however i have 16 cakes that aren't flushing well. so might as well use them right! or should i try casing them? not sure about the process. crumble, cake, cover or what?

Well just make sure they are at the highest possible humidity, make sure the FC is completely sealed. I never liked the PF tek and trying something different was the best thing I ever did. Monotubs are great because they yield a lot, and require basically no work compared to cakes and casings.. and you don't need an FC which is awesome.

Okay so you say you have "mycelium" on your caps? Are you sure this isn't cobweb? This usually only happens when you case but can also form on cakes. Cobweb looks a lot like mycelium but it's an off white color.
I believe that that would be a sign of not enough Fresh Air Exchange (FAE).
I could be totally wrong though just my 2 cents.
Are your mushrooms stems solid? Does it seem like something might already be eating them up?

Why do your cake flushes suck?
Because you're not spawning to bulk substrate. That's why!
