Even if you think yourself into a schizophrenic state, you can find your way back out.

No problem, I speak from experience. At one point in my life I thought I was hearing messages from aliens on the radio and I thought I was put here on Earth to heal everyone back to Oneness. I thought everything that people said had some deep hidden meaning that if I could only figure it out, I would reach some higher state. That was a year and a half ago, and I worked it out myself without medication or someone guiding me.
That's not to say the things I believed were false or "insane"... hell, even now a lot of it makes sense. But I just don't think like that anymore because A) it's stressful and also kind of terrifying B) life is easier when you are normal

You can potentially send yourself insane, I suppose, but never thinking to avoid this is like never opening your eyes for fear of going blind.
