I doubt the mushrooms were active. Don't eat any of them. They were probably a species of boletus. Did the mushrooms have gills? What was the general appearance of the mushrooms?

i should have taken pictures ;(

actually, now that you ask if it had gills, i don't think it did, but it was rather spongy on the underside. heh...you can tell i don't know much about mushrooms (yet). i think when i broke it, the gills appeared underneath. but what was the purpose of this "spongey" stuff?
