Drug Tunnel Found on U.S.-Mexico Border December 4, 2007 - Fox News
TECATE, Calif. — The U.S. Border Patrol said Monday that it discovered a secret tunnel that may have been used for smuggling drugs across the U.S.-Mexico border east of San Diego.
Authorities found an estimated 10,000 pounds of marijuana inside a trailer that led to the underground crevice, said Eileen Zeidler, a spokeswoman for the Drug Enforcement Administration.
A Border Patrol agent heard noise Monday from the 30-foot trailer parked 360 yards north of the border in the town of Tecate, agency spokesman James Jacques said.
When he peered inside, he saw a pistol-toting man disappear into a hole. The trailer was half-full of packages containing the marijuana.
The Border Patrol says it's unclear if the tunnel was completed. U.S. and Mexican authorities are investigating.
Authorities have discovered dozens of tunnels along the U.S.-Mexico border in recent years, with many clustered around San Diego and Nogales, Ariz.

so how long do you think it will take untill these border towns' residents realize that prohibition creates all the violence and smuggling along the border that invades their towns?
You'd think they'd get it by now... drug prohibition = more crime, less liberty, more violence, and less government revenue with more government spending

They didn't catch the guy, funny.
And why aren't they checking the tunnel to see what is in it? Or are they staying away because they can't overpower the guards? Ha. Mexico.

Mexican official slain in bed after tunnel found December 4, 2007 - LA Times
SAN DIEGO -- The deputy police chief of the Mexican border town of Tecate was gunned down in his home this morning, one day after the discovery of a cross-border tunnel that authorities believe was used for drug smuggling.
Jose Juan Soriano Pereira, 35, who was appointed second in command of the force three days ago, was asleep next to his wife when gunmen stormed the house, Mexican authorities said.
Police found 45 shell casings in the bedroom.
Soriano's wife was not hurt, officials said. The assailants are believed to have fled down the highway toward Tijuana, about 40 miles to the west.
It was not clear if the assault was linked to the discovery of the tunnel, a well-constructed passage featuring lights and ventilation that stretched more than 1,500 feet north of the border.
A U.S. Border Patrol canine unit discovered the tunnel Monday morning, along with nearly 9 tons of marijuana inside a cargo container. The tunnel's opening in Mexico was found by Mexican authorities Monday afternoon in a warehouse-like building 100 yards south of the border.
A few hours later, the gunmen killed Soriano.
Soriano was considered an honest lawman, U.S. law enforcement sources said. Some speculate he may have been killed by smugglers in retaliation for the discovery of the tunnel.
