When boiling the jars for sterilization, should you leave a towel on the bottom of the pot? Also, what setting would be best for boiling it, high, medium or low? And remember, this is without a pressure cooker.

Just adjust the heat to maintain the boiling, if it boils too rapidly you increase the risk of getting water in your jars. Once water reaches boiling temperature it won't get any hotter, it will only boil faster as more heat is applied.

Start it off on med-high to get it boiling, then turn it down to low. If you keep it too high it will cook the rice cake and it will be worhtless.

Don't do it you will fail the jars will become contaiminated. I would go on ebay or look around the net to find a cheap pressure cooker. You can probably find one on ebay for about 30 bucks. Trust me though don't even try to boil them, your chance of failing if very high.

You can attempt fractial sterilization. But, the odds for actual full sterilization are about the same as screwing 50 hookers in a weekend & thinking it is safe not to wear a condom. Odds are your going to get an STD & without a PC, the odds are much higher that jars will get a contam. The little bastards sneak in & f**k up your shit without even kissing you first.
Common household air has thousands of micron size things (spore, mold, bacteria) floating around in every square meter of air all just looking to land on a suitable colinization spot. You even exhale things that will contam a cake, grain or BS. Check eBay, thrift stores & garage sales. A cheap PC increases your odds of a clean outcome manyfold. SixTango

Shit!! I've boiled jars for over a year and at an altitude of 4600 feet above sea level
I do pre-sterilize the brf&verm(dry) in alum trays covered in foil in the oven at
300dgr.F. for a 1/2 hour then mix and load jars using the oven tek cover the jar tops with foil (so water don't get in) put the lid and ring on over the foil (if you punched through the lids with a nail... jagged side up so you don't put holes in the foil) Yes you'll need something to keep the jars off the bottom with a rag will work but try to find some chicken wire or steel mesh(this will raise your jars up so the pot will hold more water it helps if your not paying attention the pot won't run out of water and water doesn't like to boil through a rag. boil the shit out of it for an hour and a half(I usually have to add water every 20-30 min.(and i use a big pot) Ok...Water boiling while in contact with jars= sterilization time. Clean your jars with a paper towel with alcohol on it. Yes it's a bit of a pain in the ass but if you can't afford a good pressure cooker like i couldn't when i started, this will work. Oh clean yourself and your area before hand. And stay away from grain until you get a pc. Hope this helps

boiling is fine. I have boiled many times and I only lose to contamination whenever I get to much water in the jars or a bad spore syringe/print.
I steam boil (none of the jars are touching the standing/boiling water only the steam that is created touches) my jars two times for an hour long at the highest temperature setting. Haven't lost a jar to contams from sterilization yet.
I boil 2 dozen jars each time. I rotate the top and bottom jars so I sort of get a even steralization. I live a mile above sea level too...
so don't listen to no body about boiling not working!!! boiling works fine

Boiling works fine for me. I've only done 30 jars over the past few months but have had ZERO contams. I put a vegetable steamer tray in the bottom of the pot (about $5 at the MART) which keeps the jars from sitting on the bottom. Boil for an hour. Good Luck!

The shrewmen have been boiling successfully too. Another hint...don't remove the lid of the pot until it has completely cooled. Then take the jars out and inoculate.

I use a towel on the bottom to prevent them from cracking
