Different light sources

Obviously the sun is the best source of light but for those who grow in a closet under a bed or w/e . I was wondering if those string lights that people put in their car or up for christmas would be sufficient. They are cool to touch so wont start a fire under your bed. Or if there are other neat sources of light?

The suns light is only optimal during a number of months each year. The colour temp of the sun changes throughout the year.
The best type of lighting to use is a fluerescent tube with a colour temp between 6000-7000 kelvin (daylight). For smaller grows a compact fluerescent light will do better than incandescent bulbs as long as its strong enough to reach the surface of the substrate.
Small christmas tree lights are usually led,s, and wont produce enough light in the correct spectrum.
Im not saying that it wont work and nothing will happen, chances are you will get some shrooms growing. But a proper light will make a vast difference, if this is going to be complelty hidden grow i would use the compact fluerescent on a timer.
Keeping the FC under your bed sounds like a bad idea since lots of contams live on the floor. Its suggested to keep your FC a few feet of the ground

Both flourescents and CFLs are cool to touch.
The only lights I use in all my house are 11w CFL (compact flourescent lights). They are white light and have 6000k on the box. The good thing about them is that they fit into a normal bulb fitting and produce good light for little electricity and no heat.

2700K is awfully red. It might be nice for room light and for reading because it's 'warm', but you want light in the bluer end of the spectrum, so shoot for a frequency above 5,000 Kelvin.
Lumens do matter to an extent. We're not deriving energy from the light, but it does need to be bright enough to penetrate into the casing layer. Bright fluorescent light from a 'daylight' type tube seems to help generate the best pinsets over a wide range of species. I have a four tube 48" fluorescent fixture with 6500 Kelvin tubes in all four slots. This light is plenty for my mini-greenhouse. I have it hanging from the ceiling so it shines into the front of the greenhouse. Reflective foil is on the back wall of the GH. RR

The set up that RR describes is total overkill for cubes. You could grow a small crop of MJ with all that fucking light. Not necessary at all.

they sell leds in the 6500 k color temp, get those, it should work fine, haven't tried it yet, but wouldn't know why it shouldn't.

You don't actually need ANY light. Light is just one of many pinning triggers.
Any kind of light will help, but the one that works the best is the light in the 6000k range that has already been mentioned

I wouldnt say thats overkill, a mini greenhouse can hold many many trays. Those lights ensure that light can penetrate the casing layer to the substrate.

Mind explaining yourself? We get the best results growing mushrooms with fluorescent light because it's the correct color temperature.
Plants require much more light than mushrooms because they derive energy from the light source. In addition, most mj growers switch to a redder light at fruiting time, not the high frequency 'blue' light we get from our fluorescents. Perhaps you're confusing the Kelvin color temperature scale with intensity?
My fluorescent fixture provides light to six shelves, each one eight feet long and three feet deep. That's 144 square feet, thus less than 1 watt per square foot of shelf space. The foil helps to prevent the trays in the back from being shaded by those in front. I challenge the best mj grower in the world to try to grow plants under that.
Compact fluorescent bulbs work great as well for fruiting chambers and mini-greenhouses. In addition, LED technology has progressed considerably in the last few years. I'm sure it won't be long before LED fixtures are made with controllers to adjust color temperature. RR

Well you wouldn’t say anything that goes against RRs beliefs in any way. You basically paraphrased a portion of RRs post so your statement is irrelevant anyway.
And if I have interpreted the orientation of RRs lights correctly the number of trays has absolutely nothing to do with anything.
I had a set up similar to RRs, only I didn’t use foil, and had a two bulb 48" T8 ballast that was directed to the face of the greenhouse with daylight 6500k bulbs. I found no difference at all between using one bulb and two bulbs.
RR grows things other than cubes so maybe he needs it, but I can’t help but think that if he cut his light down by 50% or 75% he wouldn’t notice any difference in cube flushes.
Purchasing an expensive four bulb ballast, and then even throwing foil up to reflect the light is completely unnecessary for what the majority of the people here are trying to do.

I think its getting pretty close, not that long ago i was testing the led version of a stage par can. It could produce thousands of colours, by variying the intensity of the 3 primory colours. It had alot of led bulbs, i thin the 3 colours ver stagared in a triangle formation
Alot of the colours looked very cold.
