Gnats small bugs
    #7711921 - 12/03/07 05:09 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Ive seen acouple people asking about what to do about small bugs which seem to be gnats. obviously keeping them from being in the FC at all is a good idea but once they are already in there laying eggs or w/e. If there anything you can do besides trashing the grow ?

Get fly paper. The humidity makes it go bad pretty quick though, but it should work.

Fly paper. A small cup of coke. and a piece of grapefruit. The fly paper catches them. The cup of coke drowns them. The grapefruit attracts them then suck them up in the vacume. I just lost a BIG monotub to gnats. Your best bet is using all 3 methods. Just 1 wont cut it. I also tried drying out the substrate. That worked alright.

Once eggs are laid, it's pretty much over. Maggots will begin to craw all over, under the substrate and right through. It's trash.

what exactly are these little bastards attracted to? Could they be fruit flies, or gnats or both?

Yep.

 Fruit seems to attract and trap them, just discard them before they can reproduce.

Fly paper seems to help, as does sticking the hose of your vacuum cleaner in there and sucking them out, which is actually kind of fun. You can put a flea and tick collar for dogs in the vacuum cleaner bag to make sure the gnats get killed when they arrive.

I like the NOsquito insect controller. Combine it with a cheap timer to have it power on during your dark cycle, and it can greatly reduce insect numbers.

lost my second grow due to gnats
had like 7 large casing going
I tried fly paper but it was too late.
I flipped the casings and it was really gross

trashed all of them, put fly paper around my grow area for my upcoming grow, and washed out fruiting chamber + dumped boiling water in the perlite. that + its winter I think I'm golden

Tubs rock. I just fan the room with a peice of cardboard before I open my tub, and if there are any gnats around in the room they go airborn, and are easily grabbed with a hand.

Just keep your eyes pealed if you HAVE to open your tub.

I find that tubs dont hold enough moisture though so I suppliment with an airstone leaving the pump in a ziplock bag, half closed with polyfill in the intake end.

I know i had a problem with gnats before and the best thing that worked was using sand put it where they are coming from and its all over from there.

Don't give up on the battle. I threw out too many casings for no reason. I made a small attachment for my vacuum that is a really small hose like a 1/4 inch. It makes it very easy to suck those little bastards from between all the fruits. You can win, its just a numbers game. Use everything, fly strips, garlic spray where they get in, vacuum, and whatever else you can look up. Also make sure you eliminate possible breeding sources around the home such as wine/beer bottles.

IME they only like to lay eggs on the fruit tops. The larva will eat your fruits to shit though. They only get into the casing if you have flies that are completely out of control.

I have never got rid of mine but if you keep on top of them, the damage they can do is very minimal. Good luck man, I have been fighting the things for 6 months.

Cheers

i keep the little bastards under control by turning up the fog output on my ultrasonic. they get caught in the little water droplets on the sides when they land and try to get at the light on the outside of the greenhouse.the next day i just wipe off with a paper towel.it wont get them all but it'll be close.good luck.

Fruit flies are attracted to the smell of fungus. They are really called fungus gnats. My recommendation is to use the above methods and even burn some Nag Champa in your FC. Don't go over board and make sure you air it out. The Nag covers up the fungus smell and the smoke will drive away/kill the gnats. Good luck, they can be bastards.

CJJ, it is a bad idea to put any kind of pesticide on your mushys. They have a tendency to sop up chemicals from the substrate and concentrate it. Without knowing how each compound works with myc there is no way to know which ones are safe.

When you look at the commercial industry, its driven by profits and not regard for human health (at least on the long-term). I would suspect that anything but the evolved natural methods would be somewhat detrimental to human health. I know the quick fix always sounds better, its human nature to take those shortcuts. In other words live carefully!

BTW the mushroom industry actually employs other pests that prey on these gnats and their larva.

Cheers
