a look at how we can be controlled

I was reading Simulacra and Simulations and thought, wow - so this is how the public opinion is manipulated.
"It would take too long to run through the whole range of operational negativity, of all those scenarios of deterrence which, like Watergate, try to revive a moribund principle by simulated scandal, phantasm, murder - a sort of hormonal treatment by negativity and crisis. It is always a question of proving the real by the imaginary; proving truth by scandal; proving the law by transgression; proving work by the strike; proving the system by crisis and capital by revolution; and for that matter proving ethnology by the dispossession of its object (the Tasaday). Without counting: proving theater by anti-theater; proving art by anti-art; proving pedagogy by antipedagogy; proving psychiatry by anti-psychiatry.
It is this exact dichotomy that Baudrillard goes on to explain is the driving force behind how our reality is manipulated. If what he says is true, couldn't the 9/11 WTC attacks have been staged simply to back the war? Wouldn't that be a simple enough example of the relationship Baudrillard points out here?
p.s. - S&S is an extremely interesting book for any armchair amateur of philosophy. I'd definitely recommend it

I agree with this line of thinking - this whole material reality and the way that society is set up is based on polarity.

I read that book a couple years ago, and admittedly didn't understand a lot of it. Although what I did understand, I loved. I read it while I was in Maui, and it was a crazy experience! It provided a painfully accurate explanation of what I was seeing around me - complete and utter false consciousness.
I don't know about WTC conspiracy theories, but you should probably read Baudrillard's book on the matter, The Spirit of Terrorism. It's excellent.

I don't know if anyone knows the real answer about the WTC, I just found it an awful coincidence that things like that are typically used as tools to draw in public support - it's almost too convenient. Thanks for the recommendation though, I'll definitely check it out. S&S can be a bit over my head, so I have to slow down and think quite a bit when I'm reading it, but like you said - the parts I understand, I love.
