Wild bird seed

What kind or brand of WBS does everyone use?
I got some from Big Lots 8 lbs for $2.00
I have been PCin some jars and only had some success.

What is the right prep method.

At first I was soaking the WBS overnight, then simmering 20 mins, (removing a,ll sunflower seeds, i read they are contam magnets) then PCin for an hour.

When the jars were done they looked a little too wet, i mean water wasn't pooling in the bottom of the jars but it did look a little mushy, unlike some pre sterilzed WBS jars I have got on ebay.

Now i made a few half pints and a few pints without soaking first and it looks a little better. But a few are still getting contamed. With a dark green almost black in some spots contam. what is this?

Its not penecilin because its not powdery enough.

My PC is only 11.6 psi is an hour long enough? I put the water level halfway up the jars and fill them 3/4 of the way full before PCin. Also I punch 4 holes in the top of the lids and cover with foil before PCin.

Can you PC something too much? I mean could I pc the jars for like 1 hour and 30 mins or longer to kill all contams?

Is the time really that much of a factor since the PC is only 11.6 psi?

I rinse birdseed. Remove sunflower seeds. Soak 24 hr. Rinse again. Strain 4-6 hr. PC 2 hr 15PSI.

Petsmart has a 40lb bag for like $10. Its calling Bird Basics. Red White Blue bag.

You will have to PC longer to comp for the lower pressure.

I'm w/ homeless. I never have liked simmering. Adds to bursted grains
to the equation. Always rinse well, soak ( and in the process the majority of the sunflower seeds will float to the top) for about 24 hrs. This retains water in the wbs and allows some internal removal of endospores. Some sunflower seeds will remain and this is OK. I am at lost for the key ingredient, but sunflower seeds have a specific ingredient in which mycelium need and like. Not too much sunflower seed.

ok. maybe I am not letting them drain enough?
I am gonna soak 3 pints of wbs tonight. i can only fit 3 pint jars in my pc at once.

I am not gonna simmer and PC for 2 hours.

How high should the water level be on the side of the jars once they are sitting in the cooker?

I always let my wbs drain for about 6hrs. Over kill but the seed has plenty -o- water. Never had any probs w/ too wet or too dry.

After your pc time and open it up, there should be at least a little water at the bottom of your shelf. Work with that and you have a formula for how much water.

I have a 5 gallon bucket with small holes drilled it in that I put the bird seed into. I do about 2.5 gallons birdseed at a time. Put it in the tub. Turn on hot hot water. Fill bucket. Stick my arm in and swoosh it around and the seeds float to the top. Then I just get a cup and scoop them out and dump them into a strainer to save and give to the birds. Rinse until the water runs clear.

I am about to start soaking the bird seed in a ice chest. Can i just use hot water from the shower? I guess i don't need to worry about contams because all of them will die in the PC right?

Is there anything I need to worry about with the water? I am just gonna close it up and let it soak overnight, shaking ocassionally. Then drain in a colender in the morning.

Soak it HOT HOT water. Bath water is fine.

I rinse in that. Soak in another then switch is back to rinse again

Any brand that doesn't contain grit.

And soak until birdseed stops expanding, no simmering.
