Yeah man, just cut the top and bottom off, lay it on either of those flat surfaces and run your knife down the side repeatedly to remove the skin, then repeat the same motion to cut around the pit. Welcome to the wonderful world of mangoes :awesome:

There's a mango tree in the neighbor's yeard, but a lot of its branches hang into mine so I get free mangos during the summer time.

Here's how I cut them:

Hold the mango upright and make two cuts on either side of the long skinny pit. Cut the flesh out of the two side pieces. I cut what flesh I can from around the pit, then usually suck on it to eat the rest.

Mmmmmmmmmango!

For me a little bit of mango goes a long way. They are pretty good but a bit too sweet for me.

It's not exactly paint stripper but it has some kind of volatile flavour especially when overripe.

I find there is a very small ripeness window in which I can eat a mango. Underripe it is rock hard and tastes foul, and overripe it has this funny solvent smell.

I found it quite funny when i read the title of this thread.

When i was round my friends house on Saturday night, we decided it would be a good idea to get a blunt on rolled. I asked him which flavour he wanted to try out, black cherry or mango.

I told him i was up for black cherry and he goes " nice one, i dont even know what mango tastes like, what is a mango? "

I couldnt stop laughing for ages, i thought everyone would have known what a mango was!

they were my favorite fruit but i somehow developed an allergy. Do not let the inside of the seed or any part of the skin touch your mouth.

i was taught in costa rica by some cool-ass people how to cut a mango the right way.

You cut two slices off the side so they are shaped like oblong bowls. This should have cleaned off a good portion of the mango, leaving but a little but on the trop and bottom of the pit.

Then you cut the fruit like a grid. Lines going up and down, and left and right about 1 inch apart from each other. Dont peel off the skin, and don't cut the skin when you do this, only the pulpy inards.

Then you invert the skin, and the grid you made makes the pulp turn into bitesized cubes, which you can now bite off of the skin. (they should slide right off the skin)

Lemme see if i can't find a link to some pictures of it... Here be go... Apparently everyone on the internet cuts them this way http://www.wegmans.com/greatMeals/cookingTechniques/cuttingMango.asp

The best way to eat them is to get an awesome tasting ripe one, and just rip the skin off with your bare hands, and it leaves a pulpy fluffy look on the outside, and just eat it like a pulpy sticky apple. It gets in your teeth, but the amount of satisfaction is unbeatable. It doesn't work if they aren't ripe though, or else the skin will be pretty well fastened to the insides.

Yeah, sounds about right. Thats usually the technique I use on mangoes also. And what is left on the pit I just suck off.

I fucking love mangoes! So hard to get a good one here though. I got spoiled when I lived in Australia.

yeah thats the problem. You NEVER know if your mango is going to be good or not, unless you travel to somewhere close to the equator and buy some from a fruit stand.

Do mangoes get depressed when they are shipped to the US and Europe and lose their flavor? It really seems like it.

I have had some HORRIBLE mangoes that came from the supermarket, but then again, there have been a few batches that tasted almost as good as ones I've had from locals in central america.
