Say what you like about Mr. Chavez and the direction of the country as a whole, but they at least seem to have a functioning and legitimate election system.

My sister is a senior reporter for a prominent Russian newspaper that is printed in the capital. She's careful, but she has written a couple of articles that don't cast the gov. in a favorable light. When I talk to her on the phone she avoids all touchy subjects and you can hear little clickety-clicks.

Dick Cheney or Vladimir Putin? Probably a bit of both.

I'm more than a little worried for her considering one of her personal heroes is Anna Politkovskaya.

The Americans, yes.
But the KGB?
After seeing them pull off their hostage "rescue" a few years back, my faith in their ability to pull off any kind of operation is rather limited. Plus, they don't have a necessity to hide their spying. Everyone expects their communications to be tapped.

It'd be more fun to monitor calls and then make noise.

yep, "Good job, Venezuela" the citizens rejected his first attempt at dictatorship.
51% opposed
49% approved of Chavez being appointed for life.
Which ONLY leaves 5 more yearly bids to change the law so he can become dictator for life.

Does anyone have an English version of this amendment? I don't want to judge it based on commentary, but on the text of the amendment.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venezuelan_constitutional_referendum,_2007
Besides lifting presidential term limits, the referendum proposes to allow the media to be censored and civil liberties suspended under a state of emergency, to permit the government seizure of private property, to mandate a six-hour work day, to increase presidential power over state authorities and to end central bank autonomy.
No biggie...

He IS allowed to run again in 2012.
Although.. he could just oust the next president in yet another coup

6 hour work day? Shit. I take it all back about Chavez. I'm moving to Venezuela.
6 hourds huh? That that count the time they spend waiting around the side of Home Depot or the 7-11s?

That's pretty much the difference between George W. Bush and Al Gore for the last eight years. Al Gore would have been heaven compared to Bush.
