A fruitless endeavor...
    #7709925 - 12/03/07 08:33 AM (16 years, 1 month ago)

Well i started out with 3 cakes, 2 were contam and i crubbled the last to coffee/coir (20/80) at a ratio of 4 to 1 (coir/cake). i let it colinize for a while and when it reached about 80% (or what i thought was 80%) i cased it with 1/4 inch of verm. i stuck it in the FC at 100% humidity with 12/12 light.. for about 10 days and i have nothing to show for it... no pins or anything... Am i just impatient?

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

You need to be patient. Primordial formation can take between 8-14 days, depending on a lot of factors, so you're not quite there yet. Also, if you didn't allow a good portion of the mycelia to penetrate the casing layer, you may already have primordial formation below the casing layer.

I wouldn't even start worrying until you hit the 2 1/2 week mark,

My casings are 50/50+ (peat/verm and oystershell flour) and about 3/4" - 1" in depth, the colonized rye grain is about 5"-6" deep in my trays. For me it usually takes about a week or so until I start to see myceium poking through, then another week to a week and a half until its starts to pin... Just like RR told me, It will probably fruit when its ready just keep it in the FC. Also keep in mind that you cased it when it wasnt yet fully colonized and its got to run through the casing yet as well. Have you started seeing the mycelium poking through anywhere??

I keep my FC at 80 degrees C and everything works great.  If its poking through then your on your way!
Wait wait wait... thats all this is... I like to get things prepared for the next batch of bulk substrate while I wait for my trays to pin.  You can also isloate and clone on agar, these are the things that keep my mind off of it so I don't go checking in there a million times driving myself crazy... I know EXACTLY what your goin through...

im glad i decided to stagger start some other little grows as well...
I think once they start coming in, ill have a nice steady stream of stuff..

Now that i have a fullproof steril procedure, i make a cake or 2 every 2 weeks. This time i made a giant cake out of a large (1 pint i think) tostitos salsa jar (no shoulders FYI)

"when it reached about 80% (or what i thought was 80%) i cased it with 1/4 inch of verm"

You should wait until full colonization. Part of the time you're counting as 'fruiting' is the time spent colonizing that last 20%, and then the mycelium has to 'consolidate' its hold on the substrate, so more time is required.

Plain verm is the worst possible casing layer. It's only marginally better than fruiting uncased. You'll get much better performance from peat-verm, buffered to raise the pH, and with up to ten percent by volume of horticultural grade gypsum.
