Does this sound like a good idea?
    #7708552 - 12/02/07 09:27 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

Hey i just made some verm/brf substrate and put it in a aluminum pan, like the oines they use for catering. i put a lyer about 2 and a half inches deep. put a birthed chopped cake ( using a fork in a bag) and put that on top, more towards the middle. i put a like half inch layr of dry verm on top of that. Is this a good idea?

If you're colonizing no and if you are casing no. If you're colonizing you will get contamination. If you're are casing then it's too dry.
What are you doing?

i figured the myc would colonize the substrate and then start fruting later.

If you have uncolonized substrate on the bottom it will most likely get contaminated.

If it works, it's pure luck

Your attempting a G2G style transfer useing cakes and leaving nutrients in open air...

i mean it is inside a tuperware container ultra sanitized. should i leave it alone or spray the vrm with water. i was thinking leave in there without opening the top until it colonizes. mabe.

You will still get contam if your substrate is not sterilized. Even if it was you would still have a high risk when exposing the uncolonized sub to air.

Did you sterilize the uncolonized brf/verm mix on the bottom? Did you do this then move it to tuperware or sterilize in the tuperware?

good luck.
problem is it takes just a single mold spore in the air to hit your uncolonized substrate while you did that. then its doomed. if you did this in a still-air glove box you'd have much better chance than in open air.

you have a chance that everything will be great, but don't expect to be able to get that lucky often.

id recommend colonizing more jars, then use only fully colonized substrate. and check out a 50/50 casing tek (1/2 verm 1/2 peat moss) for the top.
