i'm writing an essay
    #7707164 - 12/02/07 03:45 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

I would appreciate/wouldn't mind some advice or just general discussion if you are bored and want to talk about the subject of my essay

I'm writing an essay on the "possibility of enlightenment" and two of the authors I'm going to be referencing are Neitzsche and either Dostoevsky or Kant.

This is the intro I just wrote:

On The Possibility Of “Enlightenment”

There once was a young soul who found himself on a strange planet called “Earth”. He was very curious as a young boy and his moments spent on Earth were full of joy and wonder. Over time, he became more cynical and unimpressed with this strange planet. He started to learn that not everyone was happy that he was on Earth, some even voiced out their disdain. He also learned about responsibility and becoming a valuable member of society; this was troublesome for the young boy for he simply wanted to live happily and not have to see the “dark” side of life. He read a book by Neitzsche with the title “Thus Spoke Zarathustra” and came to understand the dilemma he was in: while once believing that enlightenment and life itself was a path in which happiness grows to greater and greater levels, it was becoming more clear that life was a struggle for survival and in this context being a good liar was more important than doing things that one preferred.

It would flow better to say "He read Nietszche's 'Thus Spoke..'" or "He read a book by Nietzsche called 'thus spoke..'" rather than 'with the title.' It's too awkward and wordy the way you have it.

Also, is sounds like your character is an alien or something, why does it have to be a 'strange planet'? I think that diminishes the power of your example. If your character was portrayed as any joe blow, the archetypal everyman, it would be stronger, because isn't the point of enlightenment that it is the authentic possibility of any person who wishes to pursue it? If the character comes across like some sort of alien, it makes it seem like he's special and unlike the rest of us, and that he's the victim of a society which he is no part of.

Good luck with your paper!

PS- you know, I really don't want to look at all those asses.

Well, when you first become aware, Earth is very strange and you don't really get what's going on. I'm going to be defining two types of enlightenment - enlightenment as psychological freedom and enlightenment as realizing the true nature of one's situation.

I'm sorry Niamh, the asses stay for now :yinyang:

I like the way you phrase it "possibility of enlightenment" as if free will is important to emphasize and debate in the essay.

Is evolution seperate from the path to enlightenment?

Our conscious minds are completely a product of evolution, so is evolution completely and utterly a movement towards this singularity of enlightenment? Or in other words, are evolution and enlightenment the same process?

Or is enlightenment an evolutionary trait at all? Is it something we do that does not make sense in terms of betterment of individual or species? Is it some optional path that is seperate from the evolution of existence, and if so is this evidence of free will, as if this path is seperate from biological function?

Hope that triggered something. If it made no sense whatsoever, say something, i might be able to explain it better. Sounds like youve got a very interesting essay to write there.

Im writing one now on the movie and short story The Illusionist, and its implications of scientific dogma in particular. Been writing so long I just wish it was over though.

Btw, Nice collection of ass there

I'd say at least Kant would say enlightenment, at least in the mystical sense, is an impossibility.

He said our brains were structured based on his twelve categories of the phenomenal world, like space, time, existence, etc. The world as it is in itself, i.e. the kind of reality the mystic claims to get access to, cannot be accessed by the human mind.

Based on how we think, its impossible to think in terms outside of space, time, and existence.

Really, the fundamental, ultimate mystery -- the only thing you need to know to understand the deepest metaphysical secrets -- is this: that for every outside there is an inside and for every inside there is an outside, and although they are different, they go together. - Alan Watts
