Adding vermiculite to the cake?
    #7706926 - 12/02/07 02:41 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

My cakes are about to birth and I want to dunk them before putting them in the fruiting chamber. According to most guides you also need to roll them in vermiculite. Questions are:
1) Is that really necessary? (I'm out of vermiculite you see)
2) What's the purpose of the vermiculite?
Thanks in advance!

Vermiculite helps the cake retain moisture and subsequently produce more and larger fruits. Basically it's a sort of casing for your cake. Dunking is good... dunking and rolling is better.

you will get away without using the verm. the cake might not pin aswell if it was rolled in verm.

its important to have as high humidity at the surface of themyc for good hyphol not formation. the verm acts like a casing, when kept moist.

I have done a few first flushes without then rolled for the second. I noticed a huge diffence.

last cake first flush 20 grans.
second flush 40.

i've heard that verm gives it more moisture but what about it giving it uh i guess more 'texture'? ... i was reading somewhere about using a knife the put small cuts all over the cake to get better pinning. does anyone else know of this? i havent tried myself, but i always thought that along with moisture the verm give the surface of the cake more places to develop pins [like how after dunking the myc will get puffy... but that could be to funky humidity levels, but i digress]

NO, don't cut up your cake, you'll just introduce contams.

Commercial mushroom growers even compress their substrate to get a nice flat surface for even pinning, but in cakes i really don't think it is much of an issue.

Cutting the cake will damage the mycelium and it will have to recover for a period of time

I would imagine it would just delay the process and could possibly damage any pinning that could be happening underneat the surface.
