Core: Leave it in or out?
    #7706579 - 12/02/07 01:08 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

Everyone seems to have differing preparation methods for cacti.

Some leave the core in with the boiling process because it supposedly contains alkaloids too. Some leave it out because it supposedly makes you (more) sick and has no alkaloid content.

Based on your experiences, what shall I do? Core in or out?

Also, I have heard about stressing the cacti cuttings to induce more alkaloid production. I currently have them wrapped up in packaging paper, in my cold closet. Does refrigeration induce the increased production? I remember someone saying nicking the live cactus tricks it into believing that it is under attack by little beasties. Perhaps this works as well with cuttings?

A cutting cannot increase its production of active chemicals. The cactus would have to be live for stressing to work.
