Hebrew mythos. Spiritual 'exodus' from spiritual bondage. Mushrooms from dung would not have appealed to Hebrews even before Leviticus was written. Mushrooms are not exactly desert-dwelling life forms. Deserts are not known for humidity.
I agree with Icelander.

well they did mention some kind of mana, that is not specific as to what it is. Not to say its shrooms, but this concept certainly raises questions

yea that video kind of sums some of the basic ways I think of christianity...
Tree of knowledge of good and evil...Mana...Eucharist...etc
Dont eat it! Eat it! God doesnt really want you to eat it, but he secretly does!
once you get past the whole absolutist thing christianity is great. Its like a bunch of non consenting opinions on mushrooms.
Lately Ive actually been kind of glad Ive been raised catholic, as it seems very much a part of the whole process. Take taoism for example, it fundamentally teaches non-duality, but it does this by first presenting duality in all its forms. Christianity made this part of the process very real by ostensibly ruining my life.
If i was taught relativism instead of good and evil from the beginning, I think perhaps I wouldnt really be as aware of it.
Just some thoughts...

the answer to the question is simple:
because illumination takes a while.
don't hate on the time, just appreciate that they got there.

That's Daniel Merkur's playful idea. He has written a good book on Gnosticism, but more recently his writings on entheogenic sacraments has stretched credulity beyond the point of probability.

Gee, I didn't know DMT was from brains sucked out of people's noses
I think young doper got his Egyptian mummification lesson confused with something he read on the Pineal gland. As it turns out (based on a recent mummy made for the first time by professor Bob Brier), the Egyptians introduced a wire 'whisk' into the brain and beat the brain until it liquified and ran out of the nose!

You really can stretch shroomies to represent anything, because they are like literal, material, metaphor.
I think I might understand some of you what mean, Markos, because although this is presented by the stories as metaphor in form of sacrament, fruit of knowledge, and witches brew, this would seem to be nowhere consistent.
Going on the assumption that any more than one of these associations exists, I used to take this as obvious delusion for the religion as a whole, especially in context to an absolute God. But I dont tend to anymore. There is certainly possibility of a single essence that is represented in many ways, or many paths to...
Now that I think about it, maybe I will admit I see it as delusion, but that is part of the play. Like some kind of guilt happy David Linch movie, or even like the tao che ching that first associates the discrimitive ying and yang before it unifies them, it shows us truth. It is art, which is layered and illusary, meaninglessly relative, so as to make sense of our relative nature to existence.
But maybe this is all the inexperience of a disollusioned concpiricy happy college kid, and youd be right to assume that. Though I might very well be wrong, I do not believe I am invested in this in particular anymore having achieved a hopeless detatchment to the political and social roles of the religious right. What I see on a symbolical level may have this sort of consequence, but is not where I seem to derive my associations. I feel I have completely invested my ego in music and art (easy to worship art when your a closet musician), but I am attatched to the potential, such potential, of the consequences. Particularly I believe that art can save the world.
So logically, my idea of being good is to pursue art, in a unitary sense of truth, that if collectively accepted as path, would seem to iron out the wrinkles of ethical and political duality. If my perspective of art reflects culture and society, but does not grow from them, I have achieved a pure path. Or, in context to the question of mana shrooms or whatever, If I am a pure artist I might seek out the truth of the stories, and the shrooms. On the other hand I might grow from culture as psuedo artist/politician-hippie dude attatched to the immediecy of its dualistic consequences: in idealisms true freedom of religion and belief, true seperation of church and state, socialism, etc. So basically Ims saying that I could be either one of these, but I am personally as confident in my detatchment towards christianity as a religion, as I am in my artistic taste, Which like everyone else thinks, "I" rule. But I am of course very open to new things, wisdom of the elders so go right ahead.Feel free to pick me apart in my arrogance, delusion, or inexperience. I think philosophy is more a study of perspective than logic, so I do not understand how personalisms can be really be avoided. So feel free...
Anybody else out there raised catholic? Like I said in my previous post, I am learning to no longer scorn this, and actually appreciate it.
