Contaminated?

I'd like to know whether this filterbox is contaminated or simply too wet and tightly packed:

This is the result of 3 weeks of colonizing. There's no bad smell, my nose is fine

The consistency of that jar looks too gummy, like the water content is off. It doesn't look contaminated, but like you said too wet and packed too tight.

Well, sure it's not Wet Spot?

That's what someone else suggested in another forum .. however, Wet Spot seems to look like the color of brown rice flower/vermiculate.. I'm still confused

Post your pic here and I'll take a look. I can't tell anything from the thumbnail, and I won't open image shack because of the spyware they place on our computers. RR

Goatfish, you were right, it wasn't contaminated. Yesterday I threw it away 'cause I had too much doubt. I opened it up and did not smell anything bad. It wasn't a wrong decision though. I don't think the mycelium would ever get through the thick and tightly packed substrate. Only 10% was colonized after 3 weeks!

too bad, the mycelium should have gotten through it, slowly. That was too wet, not really too tightly packed ut just too wet. By the looks of the foil the water got into it during pc'ing, keep those 1/2 pints out of the water during pc'ing, they do not need to touch it

Yeah I know, it was far too wet. The weight of this cake is twice the weight of the other cakes. I cannot imagine I've put 2 times more substrate in this filterbox than in the other filterboxes (I did not weigh the filterbox+substrate before sterilization though). So water must have gotten into the filterbox I guess. I did wrap 2 layers of foil around the boxes - and I did put them into the water of the PC. Next time I'll use 3 layers of foil and I'll put them on iron lids or something in order to make sure they're out of the water. Hopefully that will prevent this overly wet substrate.
