Tipping for auto detailing?

Anyone know the proper amount to tip for an auto detail? I have to pick my car up in about 45 mins and have no idea on tipping etiquette when it comes to this. Thanks to anyone that can help.

don't tip unless you want to? if you feel the job done is worth above and beyond the price that it cost, then tip. if you feel like the cost is fine where it is, don't tip.
personally, i have never heard of anyone tipping auto detailers. whatev

I read on a tipping forum that it's 15%. I guess I see how I like the job. It's taken him 6 1/2 hours to do it, but he is there by himself today.

I tip McDonalds workers usually 10-15% depending on the speed. I tip librarians 5 dollars usually if they help me find a book good. I tip cashiers at Giant Eagle a good 30% of the check because I feel the need to pay them more for the job they already are being paid to do.

That's a great idea. I'll start doing that now. In fact, I'm going to make up for all of the tipping I didn't realize I should have been doing and empty my bank account tomorrow. Thanks for the tip.

You don't tip, now you tip... what's the story bub?
As for the auto detailer, I don't typically tip for that, but then I've been washing, cleaning, windexing, armor-allin', and waxing my own car for the last five years so I don't really have much current experience. On the whole, the only place I stick to any "rule" on tipping is at a sit-down restaurant, where for adequate service I allot 15% of the total bill and adjust accordingly if the service is less than or greater than what I consider adequate. If service is absolutely terrible, I still muster the sympathy to relinquish a 5% tip.
Anywhere other than a restaurant, odds are I'm not tipping. Concert venues or clubs with $10 - $14 drinks for example, those prices are crazy to begin with! Tipping on top of that is just ridiculous. If I'm hitting the same bar-keep hard, I may give $1 or $2 at the end of the night along with some pleasant conversation. Tipping is a little out of control these days, I sincerely dislike the way some people expect tips rather than earn them.
But back to the auto-detailing, how much are you gettin' charged for this six and a half hour job?

It depends, if the people are White or Black I usually tip. I usually don't tip mexi's tho just because chances are they're illegals and they don't deserve American money.

I detail cars... I get tips about 40% of the time... I dont really expect it, its nice when I get a nice tip though. I would assume the person/business that did you car dont REALLY expect a tip... if they did an impressive job maybe tip em $10

Everybody and their mother seems to expect a tip nowadays. What happened to just doing your job?

i only tip in two instances.
1. the job doesnt pay dick and the worker depends on tips, such as server or bartender.
2. the person goes above and beyond what they are expected to do for their job. if someone "wows" me at the job they did. ill throw them something extra.

I think it's a good idea not to feel obligated to give them any tip. If they're getting paid a fair price, they're getting paid a far price. You ca always give them a little extra, but there's no reason to feel obligated to give them the "standard tip" (such nonsense, putting a standard on gratuity). 15% is a lot of money, and unless you feel that they did a special job or they're just getting paid bad wages, then give them what is fair. Don't let the system work you like that. It ruins the whole idea of gratuity, giving it out of your own kindness.
I think it's really infuriating how some people are greedy for tips. If you've ever worked in the food service industry there's a good chance you know what I mean. I worked at this pizza place once, and the drivers were making so much money the assistant manager said they made more than he did without bonuses. And they still complained about getting "stiffed".

You should really only tip servers and bartenders because that's where their money comes from.

No, I don't really think we should do that even. I'd rather boycott tipping to put pressure on the food industry to stop paying people such low wages. If I pay a fair price why arn't they getting paid a fair price? I can imagine it as something the rich did to get a bigger piece of the pie and get consumers to pay more while seeming to have a lower price on the menu. Think about it. You pay 20 for a nice dinner and then then they want more money? Why don't they include it in the price of the meal?
